How many of these are actually insured

I find some things on this forum perplexing.

Knowing about the problems of insuring any modified car I wonder how many of the cars on this forum are 'actually' insured.

People are talking of engine upgrades, turbos. With some insurers it is a no go suspension, roll cages even brake upgrades.

So unless people are going to specialist insurers and paying a fortune (I doubt that since most are students or/and very young) am I correct in assuming that modifications are not declared.

If they are then please let me know where the 'cheap' insurance is.

i just pay a lot. better than crashing and injuring someone and having to pay for their medical bills out of your own pocket. saying that my car isnt heavily modified. i assume its a case of being of a certain age with some ncb, going to somewhere like adrian flux and having it on a limited mileage policy?

no, your not correct in assuming, not in my case anyway.
the project car isn't on the road yet, but allready had a quote with adrian flux declaring all the modifications

Adrian Flux, one call, sorted, tripled my yearly, but no probs with mods.

Had to declare total estimated power, but no visits etc.

Not as hard as I thought it would be.

i declared all my mods because ive spent to much to risk losing out , but im the only one i know thats done this,none of my mates have declared most of there stuff as its not worth it they say, in the case of alloy wheels your premium goes up but they re not covered if they are nicked,how does that work????

I have every single mod detailed and sent to the insurer at the beginning. That way, we both know what is being insured.

I have no problems with my insurer Performance Direct.

I've had a quote with Flux on a limited mileage which came out at about the same as Admiral want for a non modified car.

I figure it's worth telling them EVERYTHING, even wheels, my shiny aluminium gear knob that fact that it has an Mtech1 steering wheel and the like. That way, if I need to make a claim, they shouldn't have any leverage to try to avoid paying.

I do the same declare everything BUT I have gone passed the modified cars (too old now). Track cars different but road cars just standard.

I take my hat off to your honesty guys - WELL done. With insurance prices these days it must be costing a small fortune.

Well, the way I see it is that if you're gonna lie then your insurance is invlaid, so you might as well save the money in the first place as you'd be driving illegally either way.

Really gets my goat when you see "had an engine swap, still down as a....with the DVLA so cheap insurance"

I did sell a sport gearbox earlier in the year and yes I have two m3 'shells' in my garden.

One is an E36 M3 Evo the other is now an E30 M3 race car - fully kitted out.

Like Glenn, my conversion isnt on the road yet, but I have already got quotes from Adrian Flux and HIC with mods declared.
It was the first thing I did before I bought the engine. I wanted to make sure I could get insurance on it at the age of 23 before I started any work.

i got a quote before i started the project.
mind you, they asked three times what engine it was, then i listened to some piped music, then they came back and asked how many cc's.
then i listened to some more piped music, then they came back and asked how many horsepower i was expecting to have.

insurance company have put a stop to me putting a 2.5 lump in mine this year due to being 18 they will insure me but for an extra 1k :O

Sounds exactly like my phone call to them.

Getting the quote before starting seemed like a sensible thing to do really - no point if you cant drive it legally when youve finished.

All mods declared to HIC and the DVLA have been notified.

Swapping my insurance wasn't very expensive as they class my car as an E34 535, insurance group 17.

adrian flux actually want less if mine is modified!!! standard they can only get about Ԛ£700, but lowered, scorpion exhaust, 16" alpinas etc etc..... Ԛ£450! approx Ԛ£550 if i upgrade to anything with between 250 and 350 bhp too! ;) like a red rag to a bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like James & Glenn, I checked before I did the conversion. They didn't seem particularly bothered to be honest. No strange questions or anything really.

i'm 25 but being a married homeowner with 2 kids saves a lot on car insurance! (not quite outweighed by the other costs though!) my premiums are pretty reasonable considering i don't live in the best area and i had a reasonable size crash a few years ago...

i have been with adrian flux for 5 or 6 years though and i reckon that helps. they often promise to beat anyone elses quotes at renewal time and are very helpful.

My non modified 318is is actually slightly more to insure than me totally modded Astra GTE was (roll cage, no interior, race seats, twin carbs etc).

Specialist insurers are not too expensive. Normal insurers won't touch modified cars generally.

2.7 stripped (no) interior, roll cage, Ledas, raced at weekends, all mods declared and only 3 times what my wife pays for a 1.1 Fiesta!!

although, replacing an M20 with an M20 with a bigger capacity is not a modification nor engine conversion.

Inform the dvla, then insure as new capacity.

Just thought you would like to know.

You cant drive a car like mine and not name any mods cause there's nothing standard on my car. I was with Flux, but they refused to insure me when i had all the work done on the car and the value shot up, so i'm with HIC. I have an agreed value insurance of Ԛ£25k, but i got a letter the other day and they are trying to say the car is worth Ԛ£18k to Ԛ£19k cause they dont insure ICE. I'm sticking to my guns though cause my car actually owes me way past Ԛ£35k, so Ԛ£25k is quiet conservative i think

Ho and i had to get BM car club (Ron) and a 2nd independent valuation and they both agreed with the Ԛ£25k, so we'll see what happens

I'm with Liverpool Victoria. I'm 30 and I was paying a little over Ԛ£250 for my 318iS track car with all modifications listed.

It cost me an extra Ԛ£5 per year when I declared the mods... crazy!

Liverpool Victoria are very good, though they recently changed their rules for new customers, so I believe. They used to have a well known loophole that allowed people to insure, for example, 2.0 16v Novas as the original 1.2i car.
