A friend of mine has a e36 328i (m52 engine i believe) but while he brakes and slows down the engine cuts out!
Any ideas what may be causing this? Air/fuel mix prehaps?

Change the title of the thread to something more 'engine diagnostic help' or something to get more views.
I can't help with the problem, but it certainly won't just affect the 328 e36
Good luck

I've got a carsoft diag kit that seems to work very well on my 328i. if you get really stuck come up and plug it in if you're not too far away - M1 J30 area.
