I finally got of my ass and put the Subtle Tint film I bought AGES ago onto my E30's headlights and here are the results...

Image

With the 4300k HID's on...
Image

Took all of about 40 mins to do, really easy to work with this stuff and I'm quite pleased with the end result. Smoked headlights for about 10% of the cost of genuine Smoked Hellas and a damn sight less effort than usual the DIY approach.

The pic's do nothing for them but I think they look pretty good... especially when you factor in the cost and effort involved! winkeye

No noticable effect on light output either

Can't see why not! Will have to wait til next feb to find out though and I'll either not own the car or at least not be in the country then as I'm going travelling for 6 months in Sept. winkeye

But on a serious note, I honestly can't see why it would fail an MOT, there's absolutely no loss of light output. I drove 30 miles home from Pompey last night and the lights were as bright as ever.

Have fun travelling :)

Looks easier to do than the DIY smoked hella in the Wiki. I'll give it a go

I struggle to believe there is absolutely no loss of light output. Isn't their point to decrease light passing through. Noticeable light output maybe

Well i haven't had a light meter on them to check or anything! But I compared with one done and i couldn't tell any difference in the light output.

So no noticable difference in light output (especially with HID's)... unless you're the terminator or something with special light measuring eyes :P

The point of the stuff, according to the manufacturers is to protect the headlight glass - its a thin plastic type material so stones will just bounce off it. I just bought it cos I fancied a lazy way of achieving the smoked headlight look :D

Hi,

The product is a light protection film used in motorsport all over the world. Massive development has gone into it so as not to not reduce light output. We can't produce a product which compromises safety/reduces light output to unacceptable levels regards the UK mot for example.

To quote from our website:
Our coloured/tinted headlamp protection films may not be legal for road use on primary lighting in your country. An off-road use disclosure is hereby declared. Please check your local laws before application if you have concerns. Installation of our tinted protection film on your primary lights is done so at your own risk.
The law/Mot hand book within the UK states that front primary lighting must produce a White or Yellow light. There is no documentation about the colour of the actual lens.

Our Clear/SubtleTint/GunSmoke/OpticBlue light protection films all produce a legal natural light colour, and our Yellow produces a Yellow tinted light which is of course legal within the UK.

None of our light protection films change/adjust the beam pattern or cause insufficient light output.

if using red on the rear to tint the indecator you need to use green bulbs to make them flash orange

I seem to remember that these guys sell some LED bulbs (not sure about green), to compensate for this colour issue, on their website...

Top quality product, did my tourings headlights yellow, as you can see :)

Going to get some clear to protect my smoked Hellas and minty prefacelift fogs.

A sheet of 12" by 12" will do a full set of headlights

Got mine today and fitted it straight away. Was pretty easy, just needed the hair dryer on a low setting to get rid of the wrinkles wound the edges.

Mines the subtle tint as I didnt want it too dark.

Heres during

and the finished product

lol, thanks. Ive got a spare lamp done if I don't want the air feed anymore. I need to paint the mesh and the silver ring to get it to blend in more.
