Will be dropping the engine in tomorrow and going to take a lump hammer to the bay first.
Can someone tell me where it needs to be massaged to make the room.
Would i be right in thinking i need to hit the front of the tunnel up the way to make room for the gearbox bellhousing so i can get the mounts on position three?

Some cars don't need the tunnel bashing
, I did mine a bit, but i think Lee didn't.
If you need to, its above the g/box tunnel, but be careful, the brakebars behind that area.

Yep, but tbh, it's an engine in, look and take out, plus I had to remove the sound proofing too.
Just remember, that if you ever need to take the rocker cover off, you need the space to allow it to clear the firewall.

No probs, any more questions, just fire away.
Also, it might be helpful to leave the top 2 bolts of the g/box/engine ones, because if you need to ever change the clutch, it's then a case of, undo the engine mount nuts, take off the prop, g/box mounting, and tilt the lot on the mountings, undo the remaining g/box mounts and off it comes, or if you leave them on, it's an engine out job.
I've left the top 2 out on mine and had no issues.

I bashed my baulkhead all over above the tunnel but as rav said be carefull of the brake bar behind the baulkhead.
It only 'really' needs bashing where the head sits, ive got a pic somewhere of the required spot
ill be back

mine is in position 2.5, has sound deadening still in place, no bulkhead bashing and all bellhousing bolts fitted.
getting the gearbox off is possible but an utter barsteward! the rocker cover can come off in this position too.

it relates to the engine positions used by hartge and alpina coversions back in the day. e30.de use them as the basis for their engine mount positions and there's various benefits / disadvantages to each position.staley_turbo wrote:guys, what is this position 2.5 and 3 about?

P1 is right up forwards
P2 is a bit back from there
P3 is right back up against the bulkhead
P2.5 is the hole i drilled between the P2 and P3 mounting holes on my e30.de mounts

Right got the engine in but looks like it will have to come out again
.
We managed to get it in to position 2 but it doesnt want to go back any more as it seems the bell housing is hitting the tunnel.
There is plenty room behind the head but the bell housing is hard up to the sound deading.
Looks like the engine will have to come out to remove the deading to get it onto pos 3.
Pics are crap sorry.

Ecu plug will go through the grommet, but it's a pain, you'll have to remove the grommet first, then feed the ecu plug through, and earth goes in the origional place, on the turret.
Remember to turn the ecu 180 degrees as the loom will just reach.

Is it too big to go between the chassis rails?
With an E28 rad you need to hack the rad supports off so it slots down deeper between the rails
There's pics of a few rads in my thread when i was having problems, god knows what page

The E32 735i rad i have is identical to that apart from the end tank necking in on the passenger side. this prevents it fitting between the chassis rails which is a pain as it was 6 months old when i bought the donor car
