revs only cost fuel if the gains made in ve and pumping loss dont out weight the increase in friction and cycles per second.
so some revs are good, too many are bad.
any thing above 4 is too many on a standard m20. (based on experience of all of them bar a 2.7/2.8 stroker)

Some of you are putting waaay too much thought and effort into getting good mpg.
I just drive my E30 how I want to drive it and make sure its in as good condition as it can be and if that means it'll do 25mpg or 50mpg thats what it does.
