Particularly when going up / downhill or when weight is on the rear right wheel - an intermitant grinding / rubbing sound like something is catching or rubbing - MOT is up this week so if anyone has a clue what might be wrong I'd appreciate some direction so that I can pretend I know what I'm talking about when I take her into the garage

id start with the wheel bearing, relatively easy to do yourself in a couple of hours if your handy with the spanners, jack the car up so theres no weight on the wheel then try to shake it,if theres any play its definately the wheel bearing.

Have to disagree with you there fuzzy mate, took me and my mechanic friend over three hours to do one rear wheel bearing today (We were going to do both) and it was an absolute mission. Also the car was in a fully equipped workshop on a four poster ramp with loads of people round to help. Just disassembling the rear arm was a nightmare, then you have to try and beat the bearing out, and the new one in. I'm dreading doing the other side.

no problem mate, i think the biggest hassle is if anythings rusted or seized, then your right , it can be a nightmare and take hours

Yeah, thats what we found. Every single bloody bolt was rusty and obstinate. Don't think the serious hangovers did our workshop performance any favours either.......

Could you give me a bit more info about handbrake shoe retaining spring etc
Just had a mate pre MOT it and it failed on the handbrake, this could be the problem....he's a trained ford mechanic so would like to direct him to the source of the problem rather than letting him loose
Cheers

Erm, don't beat barings back in.. press them. If you beat them you bugger them up, they are normally still ok but don't expect it to be too long before you have to do them again..OllieB wrote:......then you have to try and beat the bearing out, and the new one in. I'm dreading doing the other side.

Well we sort of had this press kit, you get the one thats the right size for the bearing and then 'persuade' it back in with a hammer. Geez that done it has been a grease monkey for like 50yrs, so I trust him. You're right though, bearings don't take well to violence.....
