Fitting E34 sump

Fitted my E34 sump to my E36 M50 lump.
I`d already put an M20 flywheel on but when i put the sump on it looks like its touching the flywheel.
Have i done something wrong or missed something off when fitting the flywheel?
Just doesnt seem right.

you need to grind the sump a bit or have the flywheel machined

Didnt realise you had to grind the sump,i thought it was a bit in the gear box that needed grinding.Not offered box up yet tho.

Your probably better off having some shaved off the flywheel make it a bit lighter

I agree it would probably be a bit benificial. How much do you reckon shaving a bit off the flywheel would cost?

Is it not possible to fit the original flywheel /clutch off the M50 engine when using an E36 318is box ?
I'm not really after lightened, fast spin up or fast gear changes,

Can't comment on the e36 318 box but I'm running an e30 318 box in this combo with no probs. You might want to check that the spigot bearing in the crank matches the box input shaft though.

Does this also apply to the M52 and would conventional flywheel lightening (a la hongkongfuey for example) be enough?

When fitting the E34 M50 sump to the M52 you need to grind some casting fins off at the gearbox end to get clearance on the flywheel. You also need to remove the windage tray from the sump as there are extra webbing supports for the main caps on the M52 that prevent the sump fitting with the windage tray still being present. Just some rivets to drill out.

Is the e34 M50 sump the only choice when fitting an M52 to an e30?

yeah as far as I know, not sure if the E38 7 series one is any good.

If it was easy enough to get them off with the engine in-situ I'd get my hands on about 4 of them as my local scrappy has a few M50 E34 turds

e34 M50 sump and presumeably the oil pickup pipe from the same M50 lump will bolt straight onto the M52?

Thanks, that's excellent news as I'd want a lightened flywheel anyway. What I was hoping you werent going to say, was that it would need some specific machining just to make it fit.
