Touring roof liner repair....Retrim Now finished!

Interested to know if anyone has repaired a saggy touring roof liner on here or if there is a guide etc as i cant find anything!

it looks easyish to repair maybe with an iron to re-activate the adhesive? its currently held up in places with staples so its bugging me a bit

I was thinking of retriming in alcantara eventualy so might as well do that by the sounds as its tatty anyway. what adhesive did you use when relining your cars mate?

I heard that the Touring one is the only one which is easy to remake.

Basically you have to remove all sunshades, interior lights and lower the door seals.
Then unscrew the whole lot, it will drop straight away and you can get it out from the back door.

After that it is only a matter of removing the old glue and liner, and retrim it with accoustic carpet or original fabric, and refit everything once cures.

I ended up buying mine from the dealer, £220 + VAT! The pain is if you've got a sunroof is removing the old glue from around it. Ideally you need an assistant, to help lift the lining in to marry up with the clips at the tailgate end. IIRC it took me a sunny Sunday afternoon to do it (anyone remember the sun!)

I replaced mine using Bison spray adhesive. Two years on it's still in place but I may do it again soon as the front edge has turned a bit brown from the sun

The secret is in removing ALL the old glue from the liner.
Evo-stuck is a suitable glue,if it does not stick the liner in it makes you very happy whilst trying...

It will last for a while,but it's the old glue attached to the liner that is the problem,be easier to lookout for a scrapper with a sound liner!

Just put a similar reponse in Simons touring thread a few minutes ago, but Worth do a very good trim glue which is what i plan to use when i get round to doing the headlining in my touring.

I got some spray glue from a hobby shop and sprayed liberally into the gap after pulling the fabric dow at the tailgate. It only lasted 2 months!

For a better job I put some effort scraping all the old foam off the board (a horrible job) before using some of the same glue. That was 6 Months ago and it's still up.

It's not a perfect fix as I didn't take the time to put the lining back pderfectly, but at least I can now see who's following me.

so i take it the whole liner is fitted to a big board kind-of-thing that just screws out so you can work on it out of the car? Sounds like a nice weekends work, and it would look great in black fabric or maybe something a bit lairy

The liner is held in place with the sun visors, grab handles etc and 2 clips at the rear by the tailgate hinges and 4(?) in the middle. It's definitely a 2 person job replacing it!

Yes,take the thing out to work on it,you can then get gravity in your favour...
As said,it's held all around the edges,door seals,grab handles,interior lights,sun visors,two or three clips at the back,a pair of slidey things over the rear seat area that are buggers to hook back in and the sunroof...this is the biggy.
Take the front seats out so you can stand up through the hole to work on it,the entire gear and trim around all four sides has to come off,be very carefull with the stainless trim,it has sharp edges,then peel the fabric from the metal,at the forward edge there are two more clips similar to the tailgate ones.
Take your time with the trim bits to avoid breaking the clips,bits slide up or down to release,not a straight pull!

That's what I plan to do with mine..... Eventually.

At the moment there's a boatload of staples holding it in place.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the sagging isn't adhesive-related, it's the foam layer degrading.

yeah its the foam backing of the fabric that makes it soft to the touch and a little warmer.

like any of us are going to care about a detail like that.

I tried to repair the rooflining in my touring, I restuck where it had gone saggy and it lasted about a month or so. In the end I got fed up and had it retrimmed at Aldridge Trim in Wolverhampton, they did a fantastic job and it was well worth the spend as the cacky old beige one did not go well with the black leathers I fitted!!

I've had a go at this but it becomes an Icarus touring - as soon as you get warm weather, it falls down again.

They used the liner that was already in the car. It wasn't cheap as they spent loads of time removing the old glue to make sure the new lining/glue stuck properly and would never come loose. Also the material I chose wasn't standard roof lining material, I chose a thicker fabric that was superlush!!

Total cost was £350 fitted and guaranteed, have a look at their website they do re-trims for top of the range marques, when mine was there it was parked alongside Aston's, Porsche's etc!!

I'm glad I had it done and as far as I'm concerned it was well worth the money as it really sets the leathers off now and has totally transformed the interior of my 20 yr old wagon!!

Thanks for revealing the cost. That's not a bad price considering the price of a complete replacement headlining wasn't far off that price from BMW last time I checked.

I had received quotes as cheap as £150 (replaced/refitted) from other companies, but I chose the dearest as they seemed uber professional and have been doing retrims for years . . . I was more than happy with the end result!!!

old tread but bit of an update...the roof is out and has been completely stripped of its foam and nasty old glue i tried the alcantara but the stuff i have is too thick to shape around the check control area etc so i have bought 3 metres of black Nu suede from dunelms for a resonable 36 quid which is a bit finer but will still look very nice, ive also bought some black sunvisors ready for it

One thing i will say is i took the original 'fag beige' bmw liner out and stuck it in the washing machine twice- it removed ALL the old glue and it is actualy a realy nice grey and could easily be put back up, something to consider if you dont fancy completely retrimming

i will have this done by the end of next week and will take some pictures of me doing it and some more when its back in the car

Hi Toby i tried the method you did first by trying to get it to stick whilst still attached on my old e34- it didnt work either hence why i havent wasted my time with this one, i just hope the spray adhesive ive got will hold it in the summer, should do

And datourer very nice mate hope mine looks that good but i have a sunroof unfortunatly, shouldnt be to hard if i take a day or so doing it and will be well worth it. I will probably use the alcantara ive got to retrim all the boot panels which will be cool

If you just want a temporary fix. Mine has got a dozen drawing pins in it. Has been doing the job well for the last 3 years (ok not so temporary)

Mine had staples in when i bought the car they had been there a while as they had gone rusty

This is how far ive got, this took about 3 hours and was quite easy.

Could of been better on the sunvisor area but its very hard to manipulate the material around the check control area,but the sunvisors will cover the bit im not happy with anyway

Very happy with it overall and will be fitting it tomorrow.

Roofliner is now fitted in the car, wasnt to bad a little fiddly around the sunroof but nothing a bit of patience cant solve. I can see on the pics that i have a grab handle the wrong way round which is annoying but overall very happy with it

if anyone likes the look of my work contact me as i may be up for doing some more of these in the near future on an exchange basis
