My car bless 'er, really rattles straight after ignition and then continues to tick for a while. Why is this, and can it be sorted?
Im pretty sure something similar was mentioned on the old forum a while back but I couldn't find anything through search because, well, basically the old search is a bit rubbish! ;)
Any help appreciated!

my car started doing that after the cambelt was changed. My mechanic told me that the bearings in the water pump felt rough. I dont know if it is related to that. But the car runs ok otherwise.

if its a m40 engine...
its cos of shagged hydraulic tappets, and worn rockers and a worn cam.. this is the prob with m40 engines
u can learn to live with it or get a head rebuild, which will cost about £400 for parts. I did this myself on my old 318i cos it was very tappety and also the cambelt broke so i thought i may aswell rebuild it
