I have found a set of door pods for not a lot of money and was wondering whether it its worth the install or not.
I have a standard e30 headunit which has AUX IN so my ipod connects up nicely already and I still have the standard 20 year old speakers.
I want to keep the car as standard as possible (so wont be changing the headunit) and Id rather spend my $$$ on keeping the car in tip-top mechanical condition for the time being. So my question is two fold really.
1, is it worth getting the door pods and hooking them up, will they make a huge amount of difference from the standard equipment I have already ? I understand the car should be wired up already, is that the case ?
2, Is there a bog standard recommendation of a speaker to replace the front doors and rear shelf with ?
Cheers

basically the answer depends on what your speakers are like now, after 20 years i will wager they are pretty tired, and speaker technology has moved forward in this time so even a cheapo set today would sound better than what you have in.
door pods will sound better as the speakers in the floor well are really poorly placed and fitting them in the door will make things better, the good thing is it should be easier to remove and replace with standard stuff.
finally speakers are only as good as what drives them, so again a 20 year old stereo will have a poor amp by modern day standards.
my advice for what its worth is this:
change your four speakers for newer models most mainstream stuff is OK from pioneer/kenwood/sony/jvc - this is a straight swap unscrew old unplug old and replace, see how that sounds. the door pods will require some modification as the speaker wires are in the footwells, so you will need to extend them.
If memory serves correclty the standard speakers are 5 1/4 inch

Brilliant thanks mate. I admit the speakers I currently have are probably pretty ropey by now, so that will be a good start. I remember changing to a bog-standard set of Sony's in an old e32 and the difference was incredible.
All I was wondering with the pods was whether they are more 'show' than 'go'

for the serious stereo enthusiast they are go not really show, but as you seem not to be this "serious Steroe enthusiast" then i would not bother.
a lot of gains can be made by fitting an amplifier and running standard speakers through this, but this requires additional wiring etc and may not be worth the hassle.
an E30 is not an ideal place to fit a stereo anyway as its quite noisy by modern day standards and the position of the speakers is poor.

They will make a huge difference, but as Mr Lee says you'd need to change your speakers and maybe run a amp. I guess it all comes down to whether you just want noise or something with some clarity and a bit of a umph!!!!

How's things down there? Nearly went to Iraq but the money wasnt great for the dangers so turned it down. I would love another stint abroad. My girl has been waiting for me the last year in Kazakhstan and i feel sorry for her so looking to go back if i can soon

all good mate, still in the sun!
Iraq is a place i woulod avoid for the new several years..money is no good to you dead!
i know a few lads there who say its not all that bad, if you are in Bagdahd green zone or in the south og Iraq. anywhere else is a no go area for 90% of the time, and it only takes one 10%!!

Yeah i was all up for it as we would have stayed in the Green Zone until they mentioned travelling in a armed convoy everyday to the Oil Field and back, so that's risking your life twice a day! Erm no thanksmrLEE30 wrote:all good mate, still in the sun!
