looks like I will have to replace the engine on the E36 due to bad compression (needs a lot of cranking when temperatures are low).
Will know more soon.

Anybody interested? Otherwise I will weigh it in for scrap.
Complete engine with head, plenum. But no exhaust manifold or ancillaries.

M44's are known for their durability and have been reported to do +300.000mls. Hundred's of them run S/C's from Downing Atlanta taking all sorts of abuse. Did you actually tested the compression?

I am going to do a leak down test today.
I have changed a lot of parts already but as soon as it gets cold the thing cranks over like there are no spark plugs in the engine and when it finally starts a big blue cloud comes out of the exhaust.
It starts fine once run or when the weather is a bit warmer but still stinks of petrol on start-up.

well, the engine is toast! Think head gasket but not sure. Leakdown test wasn't great to say the least.

But problem is solved, we bought an E46 compact.
