Chaps just drove 400 miles round trip to pick up my iS today and frightened myself to death when it nearly over heated on the way back in a traffic jam.

It had been running with the guage dead centre but crept up to the 3/4 mark stayed there until I got some air flowing throught it again.

I stuck a paper in the viscous fan and it just stopped instead of tearing the paper to shreads and I'm replacing that on monday.

Is there anything it could be?

I'm really hoping I've not bought myself a lemon here

That's the problem, and as long as no one has actually cooked it before you bought it, should all be fine when it's changed.

Well theres no smoke form the back or mayo on the oil or coolant cap so I don;t think someone has cooked the head but I may be wrong....

Mine sits at the half way mark... until we stop in traffic, then the electric fan gets switched on...

Straight up the middle is ideal, but anywhere in the black is OK, as long as the needle is a little away from the blue and red. If it twitches at all, then the securing nuts on the back of the cluster need tightening.

When I put the fan on (manual activation) it brings it to just below the half way mark.

Mine never got over 1/4 mark until I fitted a new thermostat and it now sits at 1/2 way.

Actually I must check my fan. A couple of weeks back after sitting in a several mile long queue on a very hot day for ages the temp was approaching the red, at which point I turned the heating and fan to full then boiled alive - the temp dropped back down straight away thankfully 8)
