Evening People!!

I have finally decided that I am going to buy myself some Willwood Calipers and discs for my track car.

I know a lot of people use WMS but Rally Design is just up the road from me and I have decided to go down the Willwood route.

My question is this though.......... Should I get the 280mm Discs or the 310mm. There's about £200 difference between the two kits and am not sure whether the larger discs will be of much benefit especially as people rate the WMS kits which only use 280mm.

Any advice greatly appreciated. :)

Hey Shane,

The 280's are good enough on mine, plus 310's won't fit under 15" bbs iirc

That was the killer for me. Going for 310 instead of 280 means no 15" BBS which means at least double the cost of tyres.

Thanks guys!!

That's exactly what I needed to know! Seeing as I have four sets of 15" wheels the 280's are the ones for me!

WMS do a template for checking your wheels will fit over their kits. It may be worth asking if you can get the same from wilwood. I had to sell my MIMs as they wouldn't fit over the WMS kit.

the dynalite calipers only use one splt pin to hold the pads in and can be a bit rattly at times

I used the 280 mm kit for years and had nothing but good words to say about them

I do believe WMS are looking at some other fitting options at the moment as well so may still be worth a look

The rally design kit, requires the 2mm wheel spacers available from keri-wms, and where the caliper bracket bolts to the strut, put 2 (4 per caliper) washers in between the strut and caliper bracket to move the caliper away from the wheel some more. Don't buy the brake lines from rally design apparantly very poor. . .

This must be only on the 280 kit then as none of that is required for the 310 kit :D

correct. it's the G60 disc being thinner than the E30 disc that causes the problem. Rally design seem to ignore it though 8O

It's all in the details! :D

Does the Wilwood kit have the 1.25/1.25" piston size we introduced for the E30 to improve the RHD pedal feel?

Have Wilwood bothered creating printable templates so you can check it your wheels fit?

Does the Wilwood kit have stainless threaded inserts in the brackets to stop the bolts corroding into place (allowing higher loads as well)?
Image

The 280mm disc is the same on both WMS and Wilwood kits, the spacer is to get the wheels back where they should be, not for caliper clearance...so this applied to Wilwood as well (only 280mm). The BBS JUST clears the hub without the spacer (0.25mm maybe on a casting.....bad idea!), and the 16" Alpina reps HANG UP on the hub without the spacer (ie you tighten the wheel bolts, and the G60 disc is LOOSE!!).

As for the lines, here is a thread (with me revising the lines further, ie listening to the customer): http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=131340

Put it this way, I do a good line in parts to fix the Wilwood kit, so I end up doing their customer support for them....

Keri, thanks for all your info but now I'm undecided again!! lol

I've read a lot of your threads detailing your kits and have no doubt that your product or customer service level are excellent.

One of the things I like about the Willwood kit is that the new Midilite Caliper that comes with the kit has a single pin that retains the pads making pad changes a doddle. This is not the be all and end all but it's a feature I like.

Another reason I like the idea of Willwoods is that repair parts etc are easily available and they have a very big presence, I have tried researching WMS on the internet and apart from on forums I cannot find any info although what I read is all good. How easily available are service and repair parts for your kits? (Can you tell I may be leaning towards the WMS kits again?) winkeye

I already have braided lines fitted to the car, would I need to replace them when I get a new kit?

Would you recommend I leave the ABS in situ or bypass it?

I have LEDA coilovers on the car, would the same spacer requirements apply?

Thanks

Same as the WMS T20 caliper as used in the E30 kits - single split pin in the top!

Service parts are actually "racing industry standard" as well as the pads etc.....in simple terms they are available from us, but the Wilwood seals and pistons etc fit as well. We don't have a website as stock levels have been a bit random in previous years - things are better now so we should get that sorted out really!
furbster wrote:I already have braided lines fitted to the car, would I need to replace them when I get a new kit?
You would need to replace them, or if they are compatible with the Earls lines you might be able to send them to Earls to be rebuilt!
furbster wrote:Would you recommend I leave the ABS in situ or bypass it?
Leave it in place, the WMS piston size works fine with the ABS.
furbster wrote:I have LEDA coilovers on the car, would the same spacer requirements apply?
Ah, same as Brother-Gareth's Touring! The spacer is a "wheel vs G60 disc" thing - the struts don't have an effect uless they have got funny hubs on them (very unlikely).

Hope that helps!

I've been speaking to Keri semi-extensively the last couple of days as regards to the larger 300mm kits.
With the info and responses I have had and with the customer support and help and knowledge shown on the zone I feel safe in the knowledge that he knows what he is doing, has done his research and I'm confident in the product.
The above is far from what could be said about the rally design kits and wilwood calipers from personal experience with a friends turd

I'm surprised Keri doesn't have a fan club on FaceBook!! winkeye

In all seriousness, customer service is a massive part of any deal and up to this point I can't fault it.

I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of my new BBK and will report back as soon as I've fitted them!!

:D Your DS3000's are on their way to me apparently - I'm not used to pads that aren't Red or Yellow, you'll have to let us know how they do!

Slightly delayed I'm afraid - I've been tied up the last few days. Partly by Gareth's flywheel/crank/bolts heading off in their own directions, we've been spannering under a Touring that's covered in ice! :?
