I will see if I can get a visit in this weekend, I was supposed to go on a trawl with Everett last weekend, but had the soarer MOT in the morning and was in the dog house so couldn't chance it. At least I managed to get the lump pulled

E34s have a steering box - you can get them off in situe, I've done it twice! Although it can be a bit of a fight in a muddy breakers yard! :(

Surely your welded steering link would clear a pair of M52 manifolds Lee?

Well it will certainly help, but when I was laid under the car before I pulled the engine out, I had a look at an imaginary route the column would take if the rack spline was closer to the block and it just looked like it would interfere with the collectors on the front 3 primaries.

I haven't got a decent pic but you can see the route the pipes go near the block on this pic from the M50 days

How much hassle are E34 steering column UJ's to remove in-situ? Does the rack need to be undone and moved a bit? The local frag yard is littered with them

Dezzy, is it just the splined part of the setup you need? i.e could I hacksaw the coonts in the middle near the do-nut if I get bored trying to fight them off the splines?

If this nut is quite loose you might be able to slide the shaft back into the column and out of the UJ

Chopping up the UJ wont do it much good :)

I'd have said it was a universal joint not a swivel joint (which for some reason they've labelled as part 2).
How do these things age anyway? Given how awkward it looks to change one of these is it worth fitting one with 100k miles of driving on it, or wouldn't it be a better option to throw £40 to the dealer for a brand new part?

Not got anything done to this since pulling out the engine & box as been distracted with a list of jobs to do on the Golf and snow etc spoiling my fun.

But, I may have sourced a lockup/ workshop which may be big enough for upto 6 cars for muchos cheapness and am going to have a look at it tomorrow. Got another zoner going in with me and a mate at work, so should be cheap enough for us all and with combining tools & equipment, we should be good to rock & roll.

Was gutted mate, my boss has all the best outbuildings up there for our archived file storage.

The shed he showed me was massive, about 70feet long by about 30 wide, loads of room but it was in reality a run down chicken shed. The main doors were foiked, I mean you could crawl under the bottom of them and all the windows were just boared up with thin plywood, a kick and you'd be in.

There was another brick built outbuilding which was excellent, but he needs to fix the roof first as it's about the cave in.

This weekend it written off as we're away, so another 2 weeks until anything gets done :roll:

Gutted for you lee!

It's flustrating isn't it. My mate is devourced and last week was in the barn he rents making an exhaust altinator backet till 2.30am.

Now I wouldn't fir one minute do anything as hardcore as that but he has no one to answer to but himself.
Think how much we could get done without the women!

The first shed sounds a lot like my workshop lol. Doors are a little more solid though.

Could you not negotiate on the price? We could soon fix the doors up and and some angle iron to the windows if the landlord does not mind. Just a thought.

I didn't count, but there are at least 20 windows mate.

It's basically a corrigated panel chicken shed, I just would not be comfortable with tools & equipment left up there.

I so wish we did have a workshop as this weather is crap and it's a ball ache getting all the gear out and puttng it away each time I need to do a job on the driveway.

I'm just about to go outside in the drizzle now and replace the front to rear pipes and engine mounts on the golf, oh the joy of running 20 year old cars

Got the brake pipes done, just need to bleed it off tomorrow. Then the fun starts with the engine mounts.

Everett came over after being on a scrap yard dig, so I wasted an hour chewing the fat with him. He was impressed with my remodelling of the touring.

I'm already lagging behind on the CR24v rules mate, no fancy stoppers on my wagon :(

But a rear mount turbo will sort you out Campbell :D

I've come to the conclusion now after fighting with the Golf replacing the big rear engine mount and getting crap blown in my eyes, having to take cover from major downpours and just generally having crap time that old cars are just utterly gay and I'd rather be sat on the hard shoulder in something new with an engine management light on. :-x

I know what you mean mate.

Weather is getting better all the time though. You finished the fwd gayness now?

Once your re shell is finished you will be a happy man I reckon. Might still be sat on the hard shoulder with a ecu light on though.

i'll take the bulb out lol

Nearly finished the golf. God knows how you have put up doing your moredoor on the gravel driveway. Trying to position a 3 tonne trolley jack to support the engine is a nightmare, infact everything on FWD gayness is a nightmare.

Hopefully have it finished end of today or wednesday night. Everytime I go to start working on it, it totally chucks it down.

My drive is sh1t. Most of the oily bits were done at work though.
I have to bolt the prop up but can't be arsed as everytime I get 5 mins i just can't make myself lay on them.

This week i promise to have some progress to report! :D

Small update, no work done of course, but I will be fitting 4 of these to the turd instead of the cup style alloys.

16" x 7.5

More in keeping with Cr24V rules :)

Had a set of 4 of these kicking about in the garage, but one of them was bent. Been casually looking for another one for over 2 years now and uncle Trevor came up with the holy grail, a spare alloy never fitted to the car. So a complete set now.

What size rubber is going to be best on these then?

Will be paying Dezzy another visit for some boots me thinks

After a month of nightmares messing around with the golf, that is back on all 4 again and has a middle pedal that works.

I decided to stick the battery charger on the chromie and move it after it has been parked in the same place since November. I still swear it has the sweetest sounding little 4 pot ever, she purrs. Went down the end of the road & back and it actually felt quite peppy, must be the monster webber :mad: If it didn't have a slipping clutch this thing would have some rent in the screen and I'd be driving it.

Now have the opportunity to crack on with E30 related problems. So the touring is now sitting on 4 axle stands and ready for raping before being winched on it's belly to certain death.

Decided to park it in a different spot as sick of looking at it from the same angle :)
