In the 80's this was the kind of setup they were using.

I think it looks great. If I had the money I would go for this look. 225/50/16 front, 245/45/16 rear.

This is how my ultimate E30 would look like except not convertible.

Looks great to me, and a nice comfy sidewall to deal with the pot-holes in the road round here today!

Low and very low profiles do look good, but are they shit to drive around with?

Check out the strut brace... Its a BEAST... I prefer the tyres here though rather than the stretched look... Always look like they are about to pop off or something... Prehaps a lower profile on the actual wall, but the full wide looks mean as...

I find stretched tyres to be a bit scarey when I look at them. Are they actually a safe thing to do?

I do like the big tyres they use to put on as it's a bit funny to look at compaired to tyre techonogy of today.

Love it.

But surely a nice tyre wall like that wouldn't actually fit under the arches at all. Well especially if you wanted a drop....

if you sent a message to a tyre manufacture reference to fitting overly stretched tyres for road use what do you think they would say about it ? think they would say they are not designed to be mounted like that and they would not advise it one little bit . i dont think i would take the risk personally. bit late when the tyre deflates around a higher speed tight bend after all its the only thing between you and the road, wont be long before the bib and mot law puts a stop to it imo

Stretched tyres are just the ultimate evolution of the low profile fad and like any extreme fashion will look embarassing in ten years.

an over tretch is a negligable risk, but some tyre manufactures say its safe, for example toyo think is fine to mount a 205.40 on to an 8.5 J rim.

there is no law saying its ilegal but some police use the FM rule ( being if they look at it and think Fcuk Me then it cant be legal)

i;ve never had a stretched tyre pop off the rim and i drive on stretched tyres and drive the car hard. its takes a a LOT of force to cause it to pop off and break the bead/seal even if the tyre is deflated. but why would you drive on deflated tyre?
any tyre thats some how deflated be it stretched or not is risk

well said, it goes same way with the watches, now some skinny girls wearing some idiotic 50mm+ diameter wristwatch will look soooo stupid in 5 years...

the first pics car is just beautiful !
The second look would suit more a 2 door.

From my experience stretched tyres improve handling due to reduced tyre flex so less bodyrole/more response.....

......but forget ride quality as it goes out the window completely, especialy if the roads are harsh were you live :)

Depends what your after realy

that will look shit rav

195/50 or 45 could work but an extream stretch, but not a 205/50 it will look ballooned

205/45 will be better, or for the ultimate on a 9 or 9.5 j is 215/40

Bullsh!t...

Stretched tyres don't offer as much grip as proper width tyres and have far less grip in the wet.
What your going by is low profile tyres feel much better which is true for example 205/55s being shite compared to 205/50s.

A little stretch is fine in my opinion but too much to the point that you can see the whole bead of the rim just looks shite.

I like stretched tyres. But only when they are stretched for the right reason. It pisses me right off when i see stretched tyres on a 7J wheel with no poke, for example.
However, when you see people stretching a 195 over a 10J wheel it looks well OTT.
A lot depends on the tyre as well, some produce a nicer stretch than others. For example:

http://www.tyrestretch.com/10_195_45_R1 ... _45_13.jpg

A nice stretch
