ecu question

well i havent been on this in some time moved house and all i was out in my 325 sport the other day and i was thinking of getting a chip for the ecu to sort of liveing things up the prob i have is my cars running a 164 model of ecu was told by fella on here that the chips wont work in my model of ecu he was on about a 173 type ecu which i have in my parts collection i fitted this to my car to it woudnt fire over any sujections as what i should do as i want a chip if anyone can shed light on this would be greatfull

Are you sure the 173 was a working unit? Normally, a 173 ECU will work fine as a direct swap with a 164, as they're both Motronic 1.3. The difference is the 164 is a double-PCB unit as opposed to the single PCB of the 173.
