*Update*

Picked this up yesterday

3.73 slipper.

Image

Image

Cant wait to get it on because trying to control an M30 with a 3.64 open diff is a pain in the arse, especially traffic light grand prix.
Ive got a bit of time to paint it up and i think im going with the same theme as the engine (hammered black case and silver back plate)
ive got to get all the oil off the back first as it has no speedo sensor and when i was maneuvering it about it all p1ssed out the back, all over the slabs too :o: bloody stinks as well.

I was originally looking for a 3.91 because all i use the car for is built up area driving where a short diff is ideal for short bursts of acceleration, but i think a 3.91 would be a bit too short so im well pleased ive got a 3.73!

Whoop Whoop, cant wait :D

Todays antics
blackcountrybimmerman wrote:Wire brush, hammerite.....sweet as.
I spent about 3 hours chipping 20 years of rust off then wire brush on a drill then the Dremel came out to get to the awkard bits,it seemed to take forever and not a nice job to do,i can safely say this is the first diff ive dressed up and the last!

then i gave it a once over with hammerite (black & silver)

Few pics, oh and an Alpina rep makes an excellent diff stand :snigger:

Jobs left to do, paint the back plate bolts black, put a new bush in then put fresh oil in the throw it on the car and go snaking winkeye

Oh and this is the oil that drained out the diff,it looks as old as the diff itself :?

Image

I was told the diff came off a 70k auto so fingers crossed its fine

on a plus side at least it had oil in it as i have had many a e30 diff with nothing left in them or next to nothing.

Havent got the oil for it yet, btw the key you lent me didnt fit the drain plug, tipped my tool box upside down and dug out a 10mm allen key which fit perfectly.

Anyone know what size the driveshaft allen bolts are? and do they have a tendency to snap?

from memory, they're M10 bolts with 8mm hex key fitment. some of them have those odd female torqs bolt heads, like some bellhousing bolts have.
i've never snapped any.
remember to loosen the prop and all driveshaft bolts before removing things, it's a tad hard otherwise :) a helper here will save ages if you can get someone to operate the handbrake while you loosen them. saves lot of crawling in/out

Todays action :D

Image

I decided today to get the car in the air to remove the 3.64 open diff, the plan was to get my diff off then put the slipper on in the morning, started at 1:30 and the diff was off within an hour, German build quality strikes again as every nut & bolt came undone without a fight, anyway i was on a roll so i decided the slipper was going on today

Filled it up with nearly two litres of this stuff

Image

Then popped one of these in

Image

And at 4pm hey presto!

Image

The only problem i came across was balancing the diff on the trolley jack while lifting it up to the body but after a bit of wrestling it was on.
Dropped the car back down and went for a spin (literally) i brought the diff with no knowledge of its condition but it was very cheap, well i was surprised when it didnt whine and it locks up as it should,
so its safe to say its a 'good-un' :D

As ive gone 3.64 to 3.73 i cant really tell the difference between the two apart from it feels like it pulls a little bit better in third

Well with that done ive got to do it all again because this 3.64 vvv

Image

Will be going in this vvv

My new project, BMW Compact 318ti sport individual.

For what ive got planed for it the original small case diff wont cope :D

3.64 - 3.73 is only about 2.5% difference in gearing, so probably not a dramatic difference!

Wont be that bad because you have a large rolling radius on your wheels

I noticed a difference when i went from 16's to 15's.

Yeah its just the stock 318iS diff. I'll use it till it fails and then swap it out for a medium case.

We're not really sure what gearbox it is, as discussed in the linkage thread, as my 325i linkage is about 2 inches further back than the usual..

It was a fairly dry road, we were neck & neck off the mark but once i got into third i started creeping away from him then we got to the next set of lights and he turned off
I launched in first too so maybe if id gone for it in second i might of dealt with him quicker.
