When I bought my Sport, it came with a K&N cone air filter on it. It's made of a coarse black porous material, like a hard, but open sponge.

The lower half is really oily, and I think it could be contributing to my erratic idle and poor immediate throttle response.

How do I clean the oil off it. Do I need to buy some expensive 'special' stuff, or is there any household stuff that is just as good...?

Thanks...

Giles.

Hey Giles,

I think there's a special oil that cleans them, but I've a funny feeling that the oil is a preventative rather than a cleaner. Maybe wrong tho.

I chucked an old cossie one I had on my e28 528i in the washing machine for a laugh as it was full of crap, came out in one piece but was so dirty/oily still it had to be binned.

I have a K & N air filter on mine, but not the full cone/induction kit.

To clean it, you should buy the K & N Air Filter cleaner available from Demon Tweaks and the like.

Used properly, you outta get 1 Million miles out of it. Don't know anyone who has got 1 Million miles out of one.

giles i've tried cleaning several k&n filters, i even bought the cleaning kit once but sold it after using it once as it wasn't cheap!

never noticed any difference whatsoever. so before you waste any money, just whip the filter off and see what it runs like. some modern engines don't run right with no filter on but yours won't mind! just don't leave it off permanently like me

If you get the cleaning kit, follow the instructions, use the cleaner spray and then a garden hose pipe to flush water thoroughly, best do it in warm weather or a hair dryer will dry it, the kit is about Ԛ£10 max, i have had 5 uses out of the cleaner, but the oil spray can has still got loads left in it.
