i was just wondering if there was a list, or any info on what stereo systems and setup were avaliable from new in e30s. i know there are verious bits and pieces around, but it would be great to see some scans, pricelists etc.
i know e30s are from a time when famously german cars were very spartan, and pretty much everything was an expensive extra, which makes it quite amazing just how many specced up e30s there are around! i believe there was no radio as standard, and have heard about a radio installation preparation kit.
if this 'kit' existed, what did it include? basic wiring? speakers?
did any leave the factory with headunits or were they all dealer fit options?
my 1989 m3 has the bmw premium sound system, i.e the larger rear shelf speakers with seperate tweeters and main speaker under the grille, and kick pannel speakers plus mirror back tweeters, and a balance switch on the dash. all the speakers are nokia branded, would the premium setup have included a head unit?
from memory, my dads 1991 e30 316i which was only a couple of years old when he owned it had a pair of pioneer dual cone speakers under square grilles in the rear shelf, i assume it had front kick pannel speakers too, and i'm pretty sure it had a pioneer pullout radio cassette although that got stolen.
original e30 stereo equipment?

all the sspeakers that came out of my Japan cab was made by Nakamichi and the Sport had Sony speakers!
i still have the standard stereo (top left on the brochure) in a cupboard, its cool as you need to swipe your finger across a pad above the display to change fader, balance, treble etc..took me ages to figure it out!

It's in german, but many pics to look at. In case of questions feel free to ask.

that's very interesting
there's some strange specs on some of the cars too, i have never seen a normal digital clock in an e30, and noticed some cars have different markings for the heater air position sliders. one car has a 3 speed heater too.
the previous owner of my car has told me he took out the original cassette player which was a becker unit and threw it away
really hoping it wasnt a proper 80s becker mexico like the one on the second page

The digital clock and the 3 speed heater control were only issued to pre-pre Facelift cars.
The Becker Mexico Headunits were extremly rare. But you may have a look at the wiring- if it is not modified, it would be different from the wiring usually used. If you are not sure, take a pic and post it here.

sadly the wiring was modified and the dashboard fader switch removed too for a later unit with iso connectors.
i've got a feeling it was a becker mexico as the car was quite a high spec, m3, non sunroof, climate control air conditioning, black leather, rear blind, premium sound, heated mirrors / locks / washers, 16in bbs rs, but only a 6 button clock
the car was imported to the uk from germany in 1997, is there a way to find out what it's full original specification was? would it go into enough detail to show what headunit was fitted?
