Rusty Drums and Disks

What can I use to remove the rust of these parts? I dont really want to be painting the drum before anyone recommends this... I would rather just remove the rust ever few weeks/months... Just unsure what I can use on the braking system...

Anyone done this before and recommend anything?

Discs can easily be removed and shot blasted (sandblasted). Providing it is not too bad on the braking surface or they will have to be skimmed or replaced.

The disks are all that bad, its the drums which are the worst. I think i'm gonna try some wire wool and just take my time... Do it every other week and hopefully they'll stay shinny...

You could remove the drums, have them shot blasted then apply some hammerite. That should keep them looking good for a good while.

I've had Hammerite on my drums for about 4 months. The drums were new when i painted them, so after degreasing i gave them 2 coats, following the instructions to the letter.
The rust has already started coming through

It just a case of rubbing the down with wirebrush / wire wool / wet and dry, you could try sealining with lacquer, or if not once clean and shiny use Autosol every few weeks to keep them shining.

I think thats what i'm gonna have to do or replace them with discs, just haven't got the cash at the moment...

What would powder coating do in the long run, think it would still rust? Would look loverly in a cherry red.

I wouldnt bother with powder coating, if you rub them down properly and use paint it will lastlong enough.

Well I found somewhere local that does cheap powder coating, so might be worth just getting bits done through them as its really isn't much. I will let you know how I get on once I find out more, just need cash first...

I emailed for a quote on doing a rocker cover and inlet manifold, they said 25 quid as long as they have the colour (They have alot to look at on their website) and if its clean... I'm not sure how clean they mean as I need to call them.

If you ring them, ask them how much for brake calipers, rear drums and 4 15" bbs's too...

I will be doing all of that soon as I can afford it. I was well chuffed with that price though.

Not a bad price at all, if i want to then take the lines back to silver on the inlet manifold and rocker cover will i just be able to sand them down and polish?

I'm going to be looking to get front struts, front cross member, rear arms and beam and maybe the calipers now you've said that. So should get a decent price for a job lot all in black, would've thought they'll have that in stock all the time.

Not fancy painting the calipers? Just asking as the ones on my Seat need something doing to make them look better.

Well I thought about painting the calipers myself but might as well get them done properly if its cheap enough as they will last longer. You can get caliper paint but i'm not sure how good it is, plus if you dont prep them enough then surely the paint will blister at a later date as might still have brake dust on. :S Although, I got use of a De-carboniser

As for the Rocker cover and inlet, use some 80 grit to get deep into the lines, doing it with just that woudl make it look great straight the way, then just use a higher grit paper and keep goign over it to make it shinny, if you want it chroming then get yourself some detail polishers for a drill... Thats what I will be doing with mine soon.


Want to get the rocker cover in a nice deep red as thats the 'colour theme' i'm going with in my engine... Gonna polish up the inlet manifold until chrome (Buying spares as this will take a while), should look mint when i'm done.

I can't afford to take the calipers off the car and wait for them to be powdercoated, need the car daily so painting will be fine and just touch it up as and when needed.
