I just replaced my manky valve cover with a smart DIY black one. The problem is now that the car doesn't idle very well, is stalling and is an absolute sod to start. What could have happened?

Ed,

Sounds like you have an air leak on the new cover somewhere. If you take the oil cap off these engines while they are running, the idle will get all lumpy. Sounds like you have a leak all the time.

Make sure you have the breather pipe fitted, and also make sure you did not disturb the rubber seals on either end of the cylinder head (where the rocker shafts slide in). These will cause an air leak, but also a big oil leak, so worth checking.

Did you fit a new rocker cover gasket ?

Ian.

Yup, fitted a new gasket, replaced the breather pipe and am pretty sure that i didn't disturb anything while fitting it. Could it be that i just didn't tighten it up enough? I was pretty cautious about not over tightening the bolts.

I think it's unlikely that it's not done up tight enough. I believe the nuts are only supposed to be done up to 10Nm which is naff all really.

When you painted the new cover, did you mask off where the filler cap seals. If you have paint here, it may cause a leak.
