Which race cars ran which engine (race series wise)? Was the S42 an E36 engine?

Sorry it's such a short question but what more can I say lol?

S42 was an E36 engine and the S14B20 was used in both the E30 M3 and the E36 saloon before the S42.

How much did the S14 put out?

Says here the S42 went from 300, to 308, to 315 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M42).

Think they managed to get 320 out of the S42 at the very end.

The S14s made upto 375 in race tune but that was the 2.5, Not sure exactly what was the most the b20 did...

S14B20 - used in 320iS in Italy/Portugal and used for several motorsport classes where you were restricted to 2 litre.

S14B23 & S14B25 were used in the road M3 aswell as in motorsport.

People are running larger capacities now though, I think they are running things like 2.8 etc.

s14 in 2l guise was used in BTCC as they had the 2l supertourer rules first and i think by one or two teams in STW for a bit until they had the funds to go for the s42 as per the works cars. The Tim Harvey greeny BTCC car was an S14, but I think the later white (Soper/Winkelhok dream team) cars which totally dominated were S42s. Woudl need to confirm specifics, all the correct info is on my home pc! By the late 90s the S42 engine was much more developed as a 2l engine than the s14, was way lighter (alloy block, nikasil bores, more compact size, carbon bits like rocker cover etc) and made more power. They had single ring pistons and all sorts of ridiculous things in them.

Demlotcrew has a 2.7 crank ready for an S14B27 build. A friend of his allready has one built and it makes circa 400bhp.

I didn't know the last of the S42s used aluminin blocks...
An M42 block isn't that heavy to start with not to mention making it out of aluminium 8)

John says its "north of 300" but I don't think he's claiming 100BHP north  Even with the Greens and the slide TBs

I'm sure Andrew mentioned over 380bhp, cant bloody remeber!

Andrew has been for a lap or the Ring in Johns car, epic apparently just like the price of that crank!

I'm not sure you'll be able to read this thread without registering. But it's Johns thread on the engine build :)

Don't have to register anyway as it loaded up without me signing in :)

I'll keep that link for some bedtime reading later on I think, lol.

that crank design detail looks sweet, I love looking at CAD design for stuff! Looks good enough to command a fair price too though :(

He doesn't say publically. But I wouldn't be surprised. He's got a lot of contacts over there.

BTW is 95mm stroke and 95.5 bore. So remarkable "square" And aiming for 9K rpm! 8O He's done over 2000kms with it so it seems perfectly reliable too!

Danm that John fellow must have some engine expertise from his work or throw allot of money at someone who does.

The way he speaks of honing structures and rotation assembly, placement of oil channels in the crank etc. makes me want to take an engine appart and make it better somehow. I can't stand that I'm a novice in this field, all of my cars have yet to make that fatale cough, that is at the begining of an engine rebuild. :-x
Why is there not enough time to do it right, but allways enough time to fix the errors - I borrowed that, just so reallistic in my line of work.

Why wait for an engine to shit itself... it only takes more money to put it right before you can add the bits that add more power :D

over 2.7 litres in a 4 pot without balance shafts is interesting in terms of second order vibrations one would have thought. That's got to be more than any production automotive 4 cyl engine that I can think of... gonna have a read of the s14 board thread, well interesting stuff!

John doesnt like pub talk figures, but for argument sakes if one was to say that with street schricks up top, one should expect something around the 320bhp mark, swap the shricks with MS cams with larger valves and higher compression pistons then the quoted figures are no longer 'pub' figures

Ive got very recent footage of John last ring trip just need to edit it and ok it with John to put it on the site.

Last post of this page: http://board.s14power.com/showthread.php?t=4477&page=6

"The 2.7 S14 with all the right modifications made to it can develop approximately 400 hp plus/minus. A mild street variant will easily make 300 hp. For racers still an attractive proposition. Ive not taken mine out on the Nordschleife yet, but Ive got a good guess it will be a bit faster than with my previous 2.5.

If I actually ever did a turbo project, then it would likely start out as a fun street application installed in another e30 m3. Im sure Id play with it on the Nordschleife as well. I have already driven supercharged S14 powered E30 M3s around the Nordschleife.

Do you have any video of your car? Maybe you can post something up in your car build thread here"

How many 370hp S14B25 are around?..........its much the same likelihood that it will be as easy to get 400hp from a 2.7 as it would 370 from a 2.5.

Dunno.

HTH

But to be fair the DTM cars were that sort of power, but it was all up at 9k rpm and not so much under 4K so there's a trade off to be made somewhere.
