My wife's E46 318i (year 2000) has just had its original BMW battery changed. The temperature gauge before the battery change would only go about 1/4 of the way up, and I think the heater was getting warm to hot.Classic knackered thermostat symptoms, but with these modern engines, can a duff battery give the same symptoms?ie 183amp old 520amp new.

Nothing modern about the engine in a 2000 model 318i - its the good old 8V M43 engine which is lovely old thing thats easy to work on.
Hopefully it is just a knackered thermostat and this is not your problem but when my old E36 316i temp gauge only got to a 1/4 it was the beginning of the end of the head gasket. The M43 typically needs a head gasket between 90-100K - ask any BMW mechanic (a mate of mine said they used to do 6-7 of these a week!).
