Looking good :thumb:
Image

Ive got one of these on mine, much prefer it to the foam pads as it covers the dirty bits :)
This type is from a 325e or diesel model, M3 one is bulky at the front

thanks Dan,
if it's a 325 item then it is rude not to keep it on there :)

I think I will wire in an extra boot light in the right hand side too

I found a way to get it off the floor without using axle stands under the sills, :D
a fellow zoner knocked these beauties up in his dinner break ! they do the job perfectly !

underside stripped 8O

as i suspected it is solid , no rot rust here :)

looks a bit frilly around the spring mounts, nothing serious

it seems there has been black waxoil applied at some point, :(

can't decide if i should strip it all back and apply a new coat of clear or leave it as it is , :?

You wouuldnt want to go over the top of the original BMW factory applied underseal.

On mine for example there were plenty of signs of the original stuff either peeling or cracking, water gets in you can guess the rest.

Even the smallest 5mm cracks, really they are barely noticable, when cleaned back with the wire wheel in the drill revealed some impressive surface rust spread underneath the factory sealer, sometimes a much larger area had to be stripped back to get to clean metal/factory undercoat.

You can see from my pictures posted earlier how much i had to clean back, luckily Steves doent look anywhere near as bad.

as Paul stated I really don't want to go over the top of old underseal,

but since the surface is 99% unbroken then why fix something that's not broke ? :? maybe just touch it up ?
the black underseal is dissapointing, and the history shows a bill for 'new' undersealing done in 1994 by the dealers, they obviously used black/grey instead of clear, w a nkers...

should i scrape it back to bare metal ? maybe i should have had the entire shell media blasted/dipped at the start, 8O

I don't want it concours that was never the plan,
I just want a good clean car with no nasty suprises that looks good, and drives better, I can't wait for that day .... :D

Arrrr i see, mind the old waxoyl could be hiding some surprises then a good poke/look about underneath is a wise time investment now you can get access to see most areas.

I've had quite a strong poke about underneath and it looks solid.

I haven't gone to the same length as you guys as I wanted the car back in a few months (it's been over 6!) and don't have the time to totally dismantle but one day I would love to do what you guys are doing and to be honest a proper resto is what you guys are doing.

Will make a nice retirement project - when no parts are around anymore!

after a long poke around underneath the decision was made to leave it alone,
the factory underseal/wax oil is unbroken there is no rust present and I firmly believe in not fixing something thats not broke, so a good clean was sufficient :)

the last 2 weeks off work has been great, I have got lots of jobs done mainly fiddly bits :?
I should really take more pics, but once i get cracking I forget :(
I decided against the 'mesh' on the front Hartge valance, and went with a satin 'background'

it looks sweet I love it 8) ,

oh and the badges I have are now restored that grille badge will be removed to make way for the Original font :)

after, :)

Those Hartge body kits are pretty rare now and so are getting expensive.

I had to pay through the nose for my rear valance

I got my kit from Iain h27 about 5 years ago for what now seems a bargain price. mine was a pre facelift kit which was fitted to my facelift car, the early rear valance would not fit hence the need for big bucks for a facelift rear .

Coming on nicely Steve.

it's getting there Trev :)

the Donor car was owned by 1 family from new with 60k on the clock and Garaged every night , it has never seen the rain , took me months and hundreds of miles to find a good one !
I paid top whack for it but it has zero rust, the paint was polished to death which warranted a full re-spray,

I'd have been pleased with the car before he sent it to paint as it was in superb order.

I'll have to pop over for a gawk and to pick up those chromie rear pop outs, need to sort out that diamond schwartz front wing with Pete too

Found this site ages ago, has replica everything bodykits, however the hartge one does look different from the genuine thing :(
