I was driving home from work yesterday and about 5 mins after starting the car the clutch died. Couldnt select any gears, didn't hear anything break. I know the clutch is hydraulic but is there a cable or something that might have gone somewhere. Are there any checks i can do or should I start looking for a good clutch kit (any recomendations?) how much should the job cost to do?

check the fluid level first. mine has been needing a slave and master for a few weeks now, but has finally decided to give up lol. if thats what has happened to yours, about £60 you can get the parts for

very nice mate. I had the 9j A's on the back of mine but i didn't want the streched tires that came with them because they didn't protect the rim and normal tires would rub. I ended up swapping them for 7j like the front. I didn't want to roll the arches but i was really sad to let them go. my 9j was punctured so i didn't have much choice but to swap them with baz666's rusty 7j's :(

just checked the clutch fluid and there is some in there.

cheers

Yea the pedal feels like it did before it broke. What do you think a new fitted clutch should cost? I think the cylinder head/block has problems aswell, its using a bit of water and there's a tiny bit of white shite on the end of the dip-stick, white smoke from the pipe also...

new engine with a clutch on it is what i want really

If you need a new clutch i dont think they're that expensive unless you want a posh uprated jobby. as for the white stuff, sounds like head gasket to me, especially if its losing water. Tbh i'm still learning about these cars myself. i'm sure an E30 god will be along soon lol

Could it be the gearbox? I think I would have noticed if it was the gearbox that fell apart but can this happen?

How does a broken diff stop you selecting gears?

Maybe he meant that the lever still slots into position, but no forward movement occured?
FWIW, I read it that way too, ie it wouldn't shift from the neutral position.
