After putting up with the smell of petrol in the cabin for the last 2 months I deceided to investigate at the weekend. A couple of people said it was the fuel pipe on the fuel rail? My mate and I had a good old look around the bay but no obvious smell of petrol.
Then we opened the boot and found the source.
I have a mahooooosive hole in the drivers side rear inner wheel arch above the fuel filler pipe. My mate says there are 2 posibilities. Either there is hole/crack in the fuel filler pipe. Or the other possible reason is the petrol tank vent???? He says there is a vent in the top of the tank which when you boot the car vents excess gas? This is then coming up through the hole in the wheel arch and filling the boot up?
My question is....do the petrol tanks have vents in the top that let out excess gas when you floor the car
and
Would this be the cause of the rich smell of fuel in the car when I drive faster?
Your advise would be greatly appreciated.
Fuel Tank Vent?

Have you had a look at the top of the tank, under the back seat. Remove the inspection panel or panels. I had a split pipe which was causing me problems ! One of the pipes from the pump / sender will be the breather pipe which I believe goes to a catch tank up under the wheel arch by the filler. Primarily used to let the air escape when your filling the tank
Hope this helps

Cheers Kevin,
I did open up the inspection plate on the drivers side and had a route around. I changed the fuel pump not so long ago so thought I might have left something lose inside but bone dry and no smell. Definately coming from the boot.
