Rough when cold...

My Sport is in for lots of nice stuff to be done to it... petrol tank, Powerflex bushes, bearings, oil seals, etc... the list goes on.

While it is in, my ever so nice friend has lent me his Motorsport convertible. Lucky me. Anyway, when I go to start the car this morning, it purrs away, absolutely perfect.

Mine doesn't do this. Grrrr!

Instead, mine coughs and splutters for a few seconds, then idles quite highly until it's quite warm, then it's okay.

So, while it's in, it's also having a damn good service, plugs, dizzy cap and rotor arm, water pump thermostat and the two temp sensors on the thermostat housing. Apart from this, is there anything else I should be looking at...?

sounds like a worn AFM rail on your sport.

there is a potential rail inside your AFM and its worn near the idle. I had a few problems like this, then i rebuild the AFM and it was gone. The car doesnt shake on initial start and if you were to drive off right away before the rebuild it didnt like gear changes, the revs dropped and the car felt like it wanted to stall this has also gone.

Do I a) rebuild it or b) buy a decent second hand one or c) buy a new one?

Not very confident on re-building something so delicate...

While your spending so much on it, i'd buy a new one mate, i have a new one on my current SE, makes all the difference when starting it compared to my cream crackered one i had on my old sport.

Could this be my problem as well here's what it's doing.I did post on the old forum.
Right here's what i have done new dizzy cap,rotor arm,plugs oil+filter change and tune.Fitted new chip disconected the battery for 1hr then run car up from cold with no rev's for 20min's so ecu set's up then took it for 100mile run over different road's.On the way back the revs when changing gear over 3.5k would not drop and the tickover went up and down. So the only bit i did not have done was the idle valve cleaned,so did this with no change but looking at other 325's i see my valve is different to most other's.My one is like a 'T'were as the others are like a 'L'and fit higher up the intake pipe.I have looked for air leaks but can not find any.I just want the car running nice got to start some serious mile's for week in a couple of weeks

It has now started to not start well also

I rebult it myself its rather simple.

can you replace the little node that sits in the airflow? i had a go at removing one but cant seem to do it..

how did you rebuild yours? what did you replace/fix etc?

I just moved the pickups on the arms to a unworn area of the track.

Didnt replace anything else (painted it silver)

how many miles has yor sport done Giles? And more importanly haveyou checked under that bloody bodykit cos i'll bet £100 there rust under there!!!!

Sport's done 109k. It's currently in bits at the moment having lots of nice mechanical work done. (stuff I can't do myself - petrol tank, diff and gearbox seals, rear subframe and trailing arm mounts, wheel bearings, etc... the list goes on...) Then, in February, it'll be going in for paint, so no worries... Ex-BMW bodyshop guy. Bloody good.

She'll be mechanically perfect for the meet on the 23rd...

Replacement AFM on it's way... then I can play with that.
