I've got an annoying problem with the E34, when cold it starts easily, first turn of the key. When it's been run for a while then left to stand for a bit, turn the key & nothing !
I've replaced the starter motor & even tried disconnecting the immobiliser circuit of the alarm system but it's still the same.
Anybody got any ideas, it's definitely electrical so I'm now wondering starter relay overheating or something in that region,
:(

Dave ( Gazman ) gave me this fella card. Apparently this guy is the shizzle and is in your area mate.

JORDAN : 07789 638777 , Mobile service and his web site is www.jodan-vehicalesecurity.com

Dave has had some work done by this fella and Adi is getting him to do some also.

Had a similar problem with my 1988 E34 535iSE. Turned out, one of the fusible links in the main battery feed from under the back seat had snapped and was making intermittent contact.

I tried repairing it which worked for a while, but eventually wired a cable direct to the ECU positive feed from the fuses block on the opposite side of the engine bay, which made it a reliable starter again.

Funny you should say that , my dad had the same type of problem on his e34 540. I think it was a start motor in the end but it took BMW back in 95/96 £3000 to find it out. Also remember he had to have a new gearbox which was done under warrenty too.

I've seen this problem on E34 too. IIRC you have to look quite closely to spot that the fusible link has gone - it sometimes just has a slim crack in it.

Thanks for that Toby,
I've just removed the fuse to check - all 3 parts of it !!
I've got a new one on order, I won't know til it arrives if that's the problem but it sure as hell won't have been helping matters

It appears to have done thanks, if it does it cost 69p for 2 fuses, pity I'd previously paid £100 for a starter !!

Not one of BMW's better designs, definitely something of a weak link imho :?

but the e34 can be forgiven for it's little "quirks" as I love them to bits. Also Mr 99's rep does get the Alpina jucies going :P

The main reason my old man stupidly sol his 540 was he had gotten it up to about 110k and the extended warrenty had run out and he was scared stupid of the coasts you can get on the top end cars. Problem was it was frigging mint and some kid bought it for £5000 and I beliave it soon died in his stupid young hands. Reg was L62 JOX , Oxford green 540i Saloon with tan leather and all the goodies. BBS wheelswith Uniroyals all the way round. also derestricted which was intresting when dad found that out one time on the M40.
