Jesus, one thread talks about a 205 on an 11J rim, and here we are talking about a 205 on an undersized 5.5J rim.

What is wrong with people. You match the tyre size to the rim size people. Stop skimping on the 4 things that keep you on the road.

Ok, then. Do it. It will be fine. *

Nothing personal, but there are a lot of stupid questions posted, and getting straight to the point makes sure people are clear.

Perhaps I should have answered "yes, they should be ok...but I don't really know mate," at least you would have been happy.

*Problem with an answer like that is someone will do it, and if it causes an accident they will probably come looking for someone to blame, such is the English/American culture.

no worries mate,
I suppose I should have asked - is it safe to do this? have other people done this? should I not do this? I wasn't after a scapegoat, I was just asking for advice.

I know sometimes we get obvious questions on here (and a search will usually get you an answer) I know enough about e30's to get by (i'm halfway through a rebiuld), but I know nothing about tyre and rim sizes
So I'll take your advice, its obviously not a done thing.
cheers

Get them banded to 8" or so then put 185s on them!!*

Personally I like the chunky tyre look of the standard sized 205/55/15s and I reckon steelies (especially banded steels) look better with that same look.

My stock 14"x5.5 steelies have 195's, the 15's that I got have 175's
what are the rules regarding rim width Vs tyre width?

Im not too keen on the chunky 55 profile look but 205/50 and lowered abit looks great I think.

Those banded steelies with proper sized tyres looks brilliant though!
Much better than the elastic band look on the 11s on the other thread.

5.5J will be bloody dangerous even if the tyres were fitting right anyway. Bottle tops are a handful and they are 6 or 6.5J or something along those lines.

I'd get the 5.5s banded to 8 and put some 215/50 and 225 tyres on them 8)

If you want them banded, drop me a PM and I'll give you the guys number. He's a regular on retrorides and I'm having mine done by him soon too.
