I'd be a bit wary of this myself. Sounds too good to be true...

i'd be wary too. 'alloy' is a mixture of metals, different makes of alloy wheels will use different materials, and the weld is going to have to be different for different types.
on the other hand, people have been welding up cracks etc in alloy wheels for years so there must be a way to do it

cheers,
harry

It's just the same as banding steel wheels, except the alloy wheels have a thicker wall.
However, alloy wheels are probably made of a random grade of aluminium, which needs a matching grade of welding rod, which is difficult to get right first time.
I'd say it's safe enough.

Me too!
It's not easy, TIG welding aluminium; especially since alloy wheels are made up of a random grade of aluminium!

It looks like he hasn't actually done anything to the actual structure to compromise saftey of the wheel, he's added width to the outside edge, so looking at that, i'd be happy to have a go on the Alpinas.

Ive heard it can be done by cutting the inner edge off one wheel then welding it to the wheel to be widened that way you only have one weld on the rim, ie buy 8 standard bottle tops, cut a 3" band off the inner edge then weld it to the outer edge giving you 9j bottle tops
Obviously they have to be cut off with a lathe and balanced etc
Do you know anyone who could do this?

widened bottletops ftw
been in contact with the guy though he says to add 2" front and 3" rear to bottletops is gonna cost £100 a wheel, but because there old and BMW made there gonna be a good alloy compound, so should be safe enough. however i think he states show use only...
also asked how much to give a fake split look to them which he said he will look into

He has to say that to cover his own arse, ie if you belt it up the gutter and it splits its not he's problem.

I'm very tempted to try ...I do need a spare 14" steel for that time and if it's only £200 it's cheaper then buying some wide wheels

I would love nothing more then a staggered set of bottle tops It would be

Only BMW people would know that there is something different about the wheels.. Everyone else would just think they where factory grandma wheels....
I would absolutely consider getting 2 bottle tops done as this is exactly what I want on my car. But damn I live in Australia... I am 100% serious on this..

I figured, just wanted to rub it in a bit.
I could do it if you really wanted them wider?
Don't ruin geniune Alpinas - get some BKs to do it with.
