if youve got a refrence number, just drive it home? or have it towed? surely you have a reason so the police cannot fine you ect.

Sounds like someone is going to make a clone of your car!! As long as you've told the police, not much else you can do I don't think.

having ti towed 145miles back home is going to cost a fortune, im not sure if it is safe to drive it home with hand written on paper stuck on the car or near the windscreen even tho i have a crime number.

Just write it on cardboard, nice and neat and drive it home within the speed limits. Keep your crime ref handy if you get pulled.

Criminals are so dumb, why they don't just get the plates made up I don't know. That way you(and the police) wouldn't know the car was cloned already.

I know you are supposed to have your v5 and identity to get plates, but there are loads of places you can get them without.

Likewise, just drive home and if you get tugged say that because of the Jan 2005 regulation(that makes it difficult for ordinary members of the public to get replacement plates, but no harder for dogey people to get plates) you could not get any made up as you don't have the v5 and the only way of getting it was to drive home.

Don't speak to your insurance company IMO, as they'll probably think you want to claim for a set of numbers plates and write it down as an accident!

Without wishing to blast the locals where I live, a few Europeaners twigged to the ANPR cameras set up around docks like Harwich and Dover, which flagged up untaxed and uninsured motors to the rozzers waiting by the port gate. The simple way to bypass them was to lift the plates off something else in a carpark, drive to the dock car park, then sling the plates and check into the ferry as normal. Dunno whether you're near a port, but that was a fairly common crime down in the South-East...

stop being paranoid man, you got your crime ref, just go for it...its not unsafe is it as in terms of not being road worthy

IF you get pulled over, just explain what happned and that you cant buy plates without a v5 which is at home, show your crime ref, and off you go, all you have to say is...i could hardly leave my car miles from home

you always see caravans and trailors with cardboard number plates on

if your that worried...go on ebay for number plate sellers, put nearest 1st...and see if theres anyone close, pop round and pick em up

i'm sure with a photo copy or fax of the V5, some ID and the crime ref no you can have number plates made

@ grrrmachine

why would foriegners worry about ANPR cameras, they wouldnt be on the UK's data base because they are not UK registered :? or have totly missunderstood what yu are on about :?:

surely using nicked plates in a dock/port is the most unwise thing you could do 8O

People nick plates because it's harder to get fakes made up nowadays. And even if you can get them on ebay - you're then making a paper trail so it's easier to get found out - think like a crook and its pretty simple!

You'll undoubtedly get some "enquiries" about petrol stations, and probably a few tickets too - the good news is that if you're a long way from home where they've been stolen, then it'll hopefully just be some locals - so when you're home and you get some calls about petrol theft 200 miles away, it shouldn't cause you too much hassle!

You can drive it down the motorway on cardboard plates, but not legally! Any half decent copper (is there such a thing...?) won't get too arsey if they pull you and you explain, and give them your crime ref. But you are taking the risk of some jobsworth deciding to give you a fine and a telling off ....

I'd drive it back though.

its gotta be worth a try but I expect a lot of these places will follow the law "to the letter" so will have to see original paperwork. Copies can be forged, and I guess they risk getting in the sh!t if they break the rules.

My plates were stolen recently, too, and the community police man who called round and spoke to my partner (I was out) said that it looked like a way to get out of fines and tickets for a while

How recently, Fuzzy? I phoned Halfords as well as the guy I went to and they wanted car and personal ID.

Mine were nicked about a month or less ago.

Sounds about right - I think things have tightened up with ID recently.

Could the OP not get his car to the nearest BMW garage who would verify the licence plate number through the VIN, show something with an address / whatever on it and get it done that way?

i remember you needed id a couple of years ago then they stopped it.
just write the number on some board and tape them on until you get home. with a crime number you should be safe enough if you got stopped.
