BMW E46 M3 Diff noise
Moderator: martauto
I have E46 M3 and when i turn left or right i hear noise on diff. does anyone know anything about it?
When I start the car first then turning right or left at low speed noise coming. I will change oil but I don't know what is the additive. Shall I buy from BMW dealer?EVIR wrote:If it's only while turning tight at low speed? then it's the clutch packs grabbing then slipping and is nothing to worry about. BM do an oil with an additive that silences it. It still works the same but is quiet.

E46 M3's don't have clutch-type LSD's, they're viscous-lock LSD's, so its not that.EVIR wrote:If it's only while turning tight at low speed? then it's the clutch packs grabbing then slipping and is nothing to worry about. You say, but what noise? Is it grating, whirring, rumbling, droning... And at what speed? Parking speed, high speeds, low speeds, drifting?!
Elaborate a bit more, and you'll get some better help back

Oringinal Diff Oil 83221470080
Diff Oil with FM Booster 83222282583
Dealer only I'm afraid.
It won't work right away but be patient.
It's BMW technical that refer to them as "clutch packs"
Some owners prefer to live with the noise worrying that the slip modifiers will increase wear on the diff. There is loads of info around on the subject.

we used to get a lot of complaints about this, yes the oil with the fm booster works but bmw say to go 20 circles on full right and then 20 on left lock, if my memory serves me right its been a wile since i have done one. we have never had any back with premature wear on the diff
What does it mean goin 20 circles on full right and 20 on left lock.jone325isport wrote:we used to get a lot of complaints about this, yes the oil with the fm booster works but bmw say to go 20 circles on full right and then 20 on left lock, if my memory serves me right its been a wile since i have done one. we have never had any back with premature wear on the diff
