G'day Guys,
Just a few photos of my engine detailing progress.
Before:
Image

Image
Removing the glue holding the old deadener is a rotten job, I found the best way to do this was to douse the area liberally with turps, leave it to soak for 15 minutes or so then attack it with a plastic plasterers broad knife
Image
Gave the whole thing a good hose down
Image
Fixed the new deadener - this pre cut item (well, three items) came from Pelican Parts in the US. The genuine item was 3 times as much here and I like the cellular look of this. Also gave the bonnet underside a good cut and wax.
Stoked with the results. Will undertake further engione bay tidy up with the bonnet off and post results when done.

Isn't this the standard M42 bonnet lining?

Was thinking about doing this, and now that I need to buy a new bonnet, i'll defo be spending a wee bit extra at the stealers to get this completed.
Looks great, however I think the cutting and waxing may have gone too far OP!

whats the point of the lining?

is it just a sound proofing thing or does it limit heats effect on the engine?

Sound proofing, I'd say.

Usually find it on Diesels. Surprised to see it here, really. I can't remember, so I'll have a look over the weekend, but I don't think my Cabbi is lined.. :(

I saw someone on a resto thread complaining that the paint on their bonnet was cracked by heat from the engine when someone ran it without one of these. I've damaged mine leaving a charger in there and you can see where it clears condensation on that patch really quick when you fire it up. Might be heat & sound insulation...

get a decent liner instead of the spongy crap, these help reduce tappet noise on M40's ! :D

These were fitted to M3 or 324d.

Both parts AFAIK are NLA. They sometimes come up on ebay.

Also fitted to the 325e as well. I think they may also be different depending on which model they came from.

I think I am going to try and get my hands on one of them. I think they look far better than the foam. And I need to do my new bonnet after it gets re-sprayed. May aswell do everything at once.
