Plus the box and engine crane used to put them in?gareth wrote:maybe they're fully dressed weights, inc flywheel, clutch, manifolds, alternator etc?DanThe wrote:As a rough guide with weights ive used for posting in the past, M52 alloy block is 20kg, crank is 25kg, full cylinder head is 30kg, add another 10kg for rods/pistons, sump/oil pump etc and its still only 85kg!
Where are people getting these laughable figures from? Whoever typed them up needs strangling with his mouse cable!
I keep meaning to weigh mine! Need to find a local weigh bridge..
Could go for an alloy V8! Lots of litres for not much weight. Chevy LS1 conversion is getting popular (5.7 litres and 350bhp upwards for about the same kg as an M20) and a few guys are beginning to use Lexus 1UZ V8s.
I wouldn't be complaining...penton08 wrote:i had my car weighed yesterday. 1320kgand thats a fully laden tech 2 kitted car on burger kings, with leather and a full tank of fuel, and a s50 hanging out the front.
It's still 216bhp/tonne... nearly 30 more than it could manage in the E36
M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream

I expect mine to be about 1250 to 1300.. About the same as nathans but with no tech 2 kit, no subs, leather etc.
I recon if thats the case Dan's should be 1230-1280 as a guestimate.
I dont have the time to clean/fix oil leaks/fit new steering rack/sort stereo out, let alone weigh the bugger!

reading on the net an M42 is about 100kg, an M20 is 117, M30 140 and an S50 (iron) is 150kg... obviously gearboxes are also heavier due the bigger engine...
however i think that an M30 can be lightened about 20kg by removing A/C and idle valve an with a lightwightened flywheel

i doubt anyone has a aircon equipped M30 in a E30 as the pulley usually needs to be butchered off to get room for the rad.Luca318is wrote:reading on the net an M42 is about 100kg, an M20 is 117, M30 140 and an S50 (iron) is 150kg... obviously gearboxes are also heavier due the bigger engine...

Sorry to go off topic, but that's a cracking picture, what's the spec on the wheels, colour, who did them etc. They look great.leeparkes wrote:
I guess the S50 conversions will always be heavier, due to the power requiring stronger transmission, bigger brakes and a bigger cooling system.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

My M42 may only weigh a 100kg but will all the other fecking bits like the medium case diff, E46 M3 gearbox and other bits and pieces I doubt it'll be much behind and S50ed E30 by the end of it...
Although at least the heaviest parts of the car will be between the four wheels rather than hanging out over the front of them or all around 4 corners if it was a 6 pot or Tec 2 kitted car

Centre's are painted Gunmetal and the lips are polished like a mirror (sometimes)

Well Theo wasn't far off.Theo325 wrote:I have these bare engine weights:
M40B16 132kg
M20B27 175kg
M52B28 170kg
M50B25 198kg
M60B40 210kg
M30B35 212kg
M102 225kg
S38B36 232kg
M70B50 250kg
SR20DET 95kg
BMW engines = anchors
We borrowed a set of very expensive crane scales over the weekend.
M50B25 - 170kg's - No oil, no exhaust manifolds or wiring loom. (didn't have a gearbox to hand or we would have weighed it too)
S50B32 - 271kg's!!! - Weighed with gearbox, exhaust manifolds etc.
When the m20 comes out we'll weigh that too.

Here's a rice powerplant as a comparison
Looks like your having fun in it judging from your avatar!

Its got the injector rail and some of the loom but not all. Only other parts missing would be the clutch/flywheel and the exhaust manifolds.Theo325 wrote:Looks like the M50 has the loom attached along with a load of other bits, so that's actually not too bad at all.

For those interested. We had both an m50 and m52 engines here,so we took them completely apart and weighed just the blocks.
M50 block - 46.8kg's
M52 block - 22.2kg's
Alex
ps. Dan, if you can weigh a m50/m52 box that would be great, as we don't currently have one here.
