As per thread title.

Is it possible to install an E36 (18 button) OBC into the E30 with all the functions (if wiring in place) working properly?

Not planning to do it, just interested...

What do they have over an E30? I'm trying to remember what the E46 does and I think it has even less functions than the e30....

double fuel consumption options and average speed, thats all i can think that my e36 does over the e30 OBC.

lets face it after about a day the only ones you use with any regularity are the fuel and maybe average speed or outside temp functions, the rest is pretty gimmicky. certainly not worth doing, iirc its a complete ballache getting it to work in a non OBC e36 no matter transferring it to an e30.

Bulb failiure warning and its this that causes the install difficulties.

I'm sure the rear light loom is different as it the bulb fail warning works on resistance, or a change of it to be exact.

I wasn't planning on any kind of installation tbh. Truth be told I had a spare E36 full button OBC lying around and was simply curious.

Is yours the 18 button one? The one in my M3 is 18 button and has bulb fail warning.

i forgot about the bulb failure. yes that would probably make it nigh on impossible to fit.

tony, if your car has an 18 OBC it has bulb failure, its really just the two OBC's of the e30 combined in one unit.

also the bulb failure works on current drain not resistance i believe.
