those perished heat shields....

now, my engine bay doesn't warrant a glass bonnet or anything, but one thing that has bugged me since buying the car (very recently) was the heat shields that protect the ht leads were in tatters and looked naff....



i made some enquiries about getting them replaced as they didnt cost much but everyone i spoke sucked in plenty of air through their teeth and told me that the bolts that hold the exhaust manifold on are prone to snapping making a small job into a big (and costly) one. nobody likes a snapped shaft, so i thought i'd have a go at tarting mine up instead....

i got me some spares and set to work with my hacksaw...

then i placed them on top of the old ones, drilled a couple of holes in the corners and attached them with screws and speed clips underneath.



i know its not the monalisa, but i think it doesn't look too bad and at least it takes the eyes off it. when the manifold needs to come off, i will get it done properly of course, but this should keep me going.......

fair play you acheived what you wanted

but would have been just as quick to change it properly
just use plenty of wd etc before undoing the nuts and be gentle job done

also replace studs when swapping

But that's the point, the chances of a bolt snapping is high, so would very likely have turned a half hour job into an utter ball ache.

I'd say that's a great fix pukar, certainly looks a lot better and now the HT leads actually have a bit of protection from the heat again. Mine are rotten too, never got around to do anything with them (or the fact the manifold is blowing slightly at the back), but now the M30 conversion is about to start, I'm not too worried.

actually, the plastic cover that holds the HT leads is a replacement...the old one had broken where the two plastic hoops fit onto the rocker cover....maybe because of the shields?
