Hi all,
I have had my 316i Touring for around a month now, it had a few niggles which I have gradually fixed... the only problem is the temperature gauge - which reads above maximum all the time, its not over heating and does not have a head gasket issue.
I have tried solving it in various ways. Firstly I replaced the sender unit, no avail here, I checked the fuses, all good, and I have even switched the cluster units over with another E30 I have for parts. When switching the clusters the gauge then read cold, and stayed there...
I have read that it could be a nut behind the cluster, but that is also fine. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on the situation because it is very annoying, and potentially harmful if god forbid something went wrong under the bonnet.
Cheers,
Adam

sendor wire shorting out on the bodywork.
opps too slow, will has shown you a way to prove this is the case!!
if it does not drop it is shorted to the body

does the temp gauge read high when you fill the car up and low when its empty?
(your thread title vurses your problem description may give you a clue!)

Well what was happening on the 316 original cluster the gauge read high, and as soon as I put in the 320 cluster it read low... so it may be a case of shorting out on the bodywork.mrLEE30 wrote:sendor wire shorting out on the bodywork.

What if this is not the case?
