I've had a knocking noise on the n/s/r of my M3 for a while now which has also developed a cracking type noise to go with it .
I had it mot'd last week , and thought that would locate the problem (But it didn't the car passed no probs) Obviously pleased , but wanted to find the cause !

While it was on the ramp i also had a look underneath to see if i could see anything that may be causing it ,
The rear beam bushes seemed the place to start , so even though they passed the mot they did get an advisory so i changed them thinking my problems would be solved , which of course there not.
I,m wondering now if its the exhaust hitting on the beam (no real marks) or a duff shocker (no leaks and passed the mot)
Anyone got any ideas or experience of this kinda problem ?
cheers
Andy

did you check if the exhaust was close to the beam? close enough to hit/rub ?
also check tightness of wheel bolts and maybe check if bearing is starting to wear !

Maybe also the diff ?

really need to get it up on a ramp and check all possibilities mate :D

Check the rear shock absorber mounts inside the boot. Hope it's nothing serious.

Yes exhaust is close so close i cant really get anything between them to see if it stops.
Had it on a ramp and there is nothing really standing out as obvious.
It seems more shock, exhaust than diff or drive train as it occurs over bumps and not on power take up

Sounds more like a damper top mount to me.

Thats where i'd start!! If it was a bush they should have noticed it during the MOT, same goes for droopy exhaust rubber.

Saying that surely they would have hung off the wheels which should have identified the knock??

Oh dear...well when the cheapo GSF mount starts knocking in a week or two you will know where to look first!
Better buy would have been a genuine BMW M3 mount or an E46 cabbie one!

It wasn't their cheopo cheapest , they did do 2 sorts
The one i went for was the dearer Lemforder one ( still cheap at a tenner i know) which i was led to believe from another forum were pretty good , but we shall see in a fortnite or so eh LoL

I did actually enquire about E46 ones which were only 12 quid but they don't stock them and would have to get some in , and being an impatient s*d I decided not to wait !

Falkster : yes i'm suprised they didn't pick it up on the Mot but they didn't . they didn't even pick it up after they changed the subframe bushes after the mot

My car wouldn't be going back there.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?
