325i sport fuel pump

Hi all, i'v got a 1987 325i sport tech 1 and the fuel pump is now buzzing like crazy. I'v had a mechanic friend check and its an external pump so my question is will this pump be ok??

Pump in the link looks suitable.
As willnz says, it could be a sign that your pump is about to quit, but, if your car has a low pressure pump in the tank as well, the noise could be a sign that this pump has failed.
Unplug the tank pump while the engine is running, and see if it makes a difference.

Why would you do that, when there's a good chance that your existing pump is as good as when it left the factory??

It may well be but id still like to replace it as its most likely 20 odd years old, ill order a new in-tank pump aswell if needed and filter. I might aswell order a new sender aswell as my fuel gauge can be a bit sporadic at times lol

You don't comprehend the quality that BMW demanded from its suppliers! The twenty year old one will probably outlast the new aftermarket one.

i bought one of those fse pumps. it was an uprated cosworth fitment. it was a walbro 244 pump in their packaging. walbro make good pumps.

thats good new fuzzy lol and brian, the fuel pump on there is obviously great quality as its lasted 180k and 20 years but even if it does keep working, i'd have thought a newer more efficient pump would be an improvement, as the old one cant be as good as when it was new

The fuel pump on any E30 supplies much more fuel than the engine consumes, many times over, and can do so at a far greater pressure than is required.
The fuel pressure regulator bleeds off the excess fuel, and maintains the rail pressure at 2.5 bar, or whatever your particular engine requires, and the injectors flow whatever fuel they are instructed to by the ECU. Your fuel pump would have to be in very poor condition to make the FPR redundant, even at high revs/full power!

even so, if its buzzing its obviously on its way out, so needs replacing and its only £66

Hi i cant comment on the fuel pump but I thought it a good oppertunity to ask why my 88 325 auto is drinking soo much fuel, I filled the tank then drove 10 miles to have a service 2 and tappets done then drove 10 miles home parked her in the garage... drove maybe another 50 miles and then today i took it for a blast along the by-pass and its nearly empty!!!

Thanks for any help on this...

No it's not! It will be noisy (but still perfectly healthy) if the low pressure pump feeding it has failed.

how much fuel was in it when you got it back from its sertvice?
