Will widening the track have a noticeable increase in handling performance. I realise the M3 is about 20mm or so wider and is obviously an improvement is going beyond this beneficial?

Also how is the track widened on the E30 M3's? Therough wider suspension components or through width of tyres?

Why not fit the a 5 stud conversion on the rear which will give you 20mm wider track on each side; so 40mm overall. Giving you bigger brakes, and 5 stud conversion to fit bigger/better/deeper wheels.

I'm in the process of designing/building an adjustable rear subframe at the minute. So it would just be a case of spacing the trailing arms outwards and using some longer drive shafts.

Sorry to hijack this thread! But I wondered this - you can fit special offset wheels to conteract the effect of the increased track from a 5-stud conversion, but I always thought this track would be beneficial if you could roll/flare the arches to make it fit...would this be right?

Fit the wheels in accordance to the 5 stud set up. Modify the arches; not much of an issue tbh. Wider track is what you need/want
