Why not just buy one of the many for sale in the UK?
I'm confused as to why you would bother to import one.

Probably to get a rot free version that's spent it's driving life in a dry, hot country with little rain and no salt on the roads.-ollie- wrote:Why not just buy one of the many for sale in the UK?

It depends on where the car is at the moment and how quickly you want to do it. I imported my 320is from Italy - it was a ball ache at that end due to endless red tape, but really easy at the UK end. Germany to UK is dead easy.
What have you got in mind?

Advice will depend where it's coming from.
Many uk ones are going back to Europe thanks to the week pound so you'll struggle to find one for a decent price. Us cars are a different, less desirable spec, Japanese ones can be a good buy, but lots seem to have had poor quality non standard colour resprays and missmatched interiors.
That said, a good solid car for a decent price will be worth having no matter where in the world it is!

If importing within EU fly over check it out in person if all is good drive it back yourself over a weekend. Most insurance companies do short temp cover, the peace of mind seeing it yourself and driving it back is worth it i think. If outside the EU your buying blind, find a specialist car import company in that country and pay the fee let them do the headache work, remember this way you have to pay duties and tax on overall amount atleast 30-70% more ontop.

I have yet to find an insurance company that will insure a foreign-registered car. Would be interesting to hear if you know of one.ShakeyC wrote:Most insurance companies do short temp cover

Adrian Flux insured the 'folly' whilst it was on French plates so I could obtain an MoT and ViC check. But it was costly....years cover was in the region of £450,cancelled after a week or so for a refund of about £375ish.LuckyP wrote:I have yet to find an insurance company that will insure a foreign-registered car. Still a lot cheaper than a fine for no insurance, but in that few days the car covered 5 miles
Unfortunatley I have no access to a trailer!

My policy states i can insure from daily to weekly basis maximum 3 months temp cover. And i have european cover anyway as part of my policy, it can be my own, a rental or someone elses with thier permission and its all legal above board.LuckyP wrote:I have yet to find an insurance company that will insure a foreign-registered car.
