good S14s are going for about 3-5K these days and might still need a slight rebuild at that so you'd have a very good M42 for that money if you can do the work yourself.

It kinda depends what you want really...
If your just looking for about 200bhp or so, working on the M42 may be better but if you want 240-270 a rebuilt S14 will be better in the long run.

And another factor is, why do you want to keep it a 4 pot?
If its just the handling of the 4 pot, just forget about it and go for an M52 as it'll be cheaper and more useable engine.

If you want to be different and go against the grain, no reason not go for a worked M42 or S14 though even if it isn't as economical as and engine swap:wink:

the later aluminium blocked sixes are not really heavier than a steel blocked 4-pot.

No, but the engines centre of mass is that much further forward to make a significant difference to the cars moment of inertia about the vertical.

The engines centre of mass would only be 1 cylinder further forward, assuming the back of the engines were in a similar position. . . 90mm? moving 120kg forward by 90mm compared to the rest of the weight of the car would be slightly noticeable but a long long way from disastrous, and in my opinion would be minor compared to the near extra 100bhp & 100lbs/ft a chipped m52b28 with m50 inlet gubbins would provide!!!

I love imaginging the whole car rotating around a vertical point, and the effects of component placement.

If only BMW put the whels in the corners, oops, then I'd have a dull shitbox LOL

An M52b28 is about the same weight as an S14 and once let breath properly gives as much power as an M3 Evo or even Sport Evo but with a far greater torque spread.

M52b28 could be picked up for 500 quid,
inlet, S52 cams, re-map and fitting to the iS could be done for less than £1000.
Could even use your 318iS gearbox to keep overall weight down and not have to mess about with prop shafts

250bhp from a torquey 6pot thats a readily availible engine to get hold of as opposed to the guts of 5K for a oddball M42 build or hard to find S14 with less power unless you go mad such as an S42 or S14b25 with 270bhp or so but then will be a useless engine until about 4000rpm.

I'm an awful deluded M42 owner but I can still see sence in a modern engine...So I'm going to have to have the best of both worlds :D

meh, fully built 200bhp+ m42 is a cool thing in an e30 and not thaaat expensive to do. M5x is a great engine (my daily is an e46 330ci!) but I like 4pots in e30s! short diff, light buzzy engine revving to 7.5k etc is lots of fun. Obviously it's not the best bhp per buck, but I don't really care. Is good fun to build, more unique etc. I also get much better fuel economy than my e46 in it. An S14 would be even better though!

Where are your figures from?

An S14 weighs 105 kg
Alloy block M5x weighs 125kg
Iron block M5x is 136kg
S52 is almost 150kg

I was pretty sure the S14 weighs 114 and M52 weighs about 115-119ish.

I stand corrected as I'm sure you'd know the weight of an S14 better than me :D

Someone really needs to weigh some engines.

my understanding is, (a functional engine in the bay, with ancillaries, and fluids):

M30 215kgs
M20/M50 170kgs
M52 150kgs
At a guess for the S14, a steel blocked 4-pot, 16v engine, with ally inlet manifold would be about 20% less than the M20/M50
136kgs

just don't go for the S14. Nice engine, nice to drive but these days even a slight rebuild means £££££....
And if you are lucky to find a GOOD low mileage S14 ---> £££££££....
to get 270bhp out of it I guess another 4k are required on top of the rebuild.

Hmmm, I was seriously considering the S14 swap into the little 318is. Not thinking of more power just yet just a standard S14 @200 ish. Not sensible I know  !

Just need to know if I can use my existing 'box (rebuilt), prop and other hardware and also if there will be any wiring issues with engine loom into main loom.

Has anyone done this? All help appreciated.

bullwinkle, the s14 needs the dogleg to go with it - don't entertain keeping the 240 out of the 318is! The IS box would do the job, but really that's missing part of the wonder of the s14!
It's a great idea, wish I had the budget to put an s14 into my e30 - mine just doesn't warrant it though really - the cost would be excessive esp given the mileage I do and what I use the car for.

True. An S14 without the dogleg box and its nice gearing is really missing the point :)
