Open Air sub

Boys, space in the boot of my E30 is vital at times, well most times, I remember as a young boy back in South Africa, a couple of 325is`s with open air subs on the rear deck and the ski hatch. They sounded good and the way they mounted them looked as if they came from the factory, so any ideas on the purrrfect sub for my project?

Also, any pics of such set ups would be great

Hmm, dunno, they dont appeal to me, maybe I gotta hear them to change my mind but they definitley save valuable space. Surely they cant be that loud . Has anyone heard these things?

i'm interested to know whether these sound alright too. Might be ok to shove under the front seats just for a little extra bass..

Of course theyre not SPL subs, but enough to give you serious depth, with quality ... i was just amazed at the size and the output of the little things...

Maybe you could mount them in the lower part of your boot lid? My mate has an Impreza wagon and was toying with that idea but the depth of even the smallest 10" was too great, these babies flip the script for sure, you know what, the more I look at them the more they grow on me! Hmmm....

For sure... we done an E46 M3 cab with 2 of these badboys...

Nah sorry fella, you just dont think at the time...
werent nothing too fancy.. stealth box, firing into the ski hatch... when the arm rests down...
looked real neat, the box was virtually a perfect fit under the roof compartment... once the boot was open you wouldnt think it was there...

And we just deadbread-ed the lid, and sides

I bought a Pioneer with built in Amp for my 7 series as boot space was vital.

Didnt sound too good in the 7 series as its a big car but i am now using it in my Supra and sounds great.

now thats space saving!!!! but doesn`t look as if it has enough power. Any pics of it installed in your supra?

I have a 3.0 litre, non turbo, manual, k plate.

Ill get some pics later, this weekend. Used to have a Celica but had a nasty accident so went one higher and got the supra.

The boot install is not much, as the pioneer just lays flat behind the rear seats on the shelf as the Supra's dont have much of a boot. Does sound good though.

You have to listen to it to believe it. If your even if the Sheffield area, i can show you.

Oh yeah, this sub comes with a remote that you can operate from the front to turn the bass up and down and its input power. Well wicked.

I still can`t picture that enclosure producing a good quality an level of bass??!!! Is there one large or many small surface covering speakers in there? Maybe four 4" woofers or two 8`s? Looks good though.

What E30 is it?? Coupe/4dr/touring??? Various places you could hide smaller subs with a good amount of effort!!!!!!

Do you use the glovebox?? I reckon you could make a nice enclusure there for one of those JL's!!!! Not heard one yet, but having played with some of their other stuff, i'm sure it'd be plenty good enough for most people!!!!!

You can get some 8's and 10's that'll play well in small enclosures - even smaller drivers than that - then it's just about design/building it cleverly!!! Focal did a good 5 inch sub which you see for sale occasionally!! I've got some 4 inch subs tucked away for when i next need a stealth install!!!

Use the spare wheel well?
Got a rear armrest - i've though about a little enclosure there before!!
Rear side panels in a 2dr maybe!!!
Model your own rear shelf - raised slightly on top and put two 8 inchers where the standard rears would be - full size enlosure under the shelf for them could be pretty slim!!
Rear storage areas on a touring could be made into useful enclosures!!!
Could even make something removable??

Also, worth asking on the talkaudio forum - some clever guys and installers on there!!
Someone on there did an install a while back with a free air 12 or 15 in an e30 saloon - effectively uses the boot as a sub enclosure, so you could still put stuff in it if you wanted!!

I'm full of ideas - just lacking in time and money to do them myself.

It`s a 4 door jobbie, think I`m gonna have to do a bit more research cause you`ve brought up a few options that I`m liking( two 8`s on the back shelf in a box mainly). Maybe a 10" in the middle of the shelf with a shallow but wide box underneath it, so I can still use stock speaker locations for some full range speakers. NICE........

Not heard one of these, but mb quarts are generally pretty good i reckon!!

May have to cut up the rear shelf to fit a 10" in the centre though - a lot of people on here will say don't, but i probably would!! Lol!!
