Hi, Does anyone know the correct procedure in renewing the rocker cover gasket on an M40 engine. Its made from rubber and I am unsure as to wheter I need to apply a gasket sealer as well. The Haynes manual isn't specific enough for the engine code.

Also I may have overtightened the lower corner bolt (bulkhead side) that now spins freely. Will this envolve removing the head and getting it rethreaded on a machine or something.

Many thanks Dal

I didnt use any sealer on my old 316i M40 and that didnt leak at all.

I never use any sealer on gaskets unless recommended by the manufacturer.

As for the thread a good engineering works or garage should be able to fit a helicoil to it without removing the head, this involves carefully drilling out the hole then re-threading it with a special tap then fitting the helicoil insert.

Not a big job, maybe 45 mins.

Dont leave it though as it may well leak if you cannot tighten it, and dont be so heavy handed next time :snigger:

Cheers,

I had like three bolts like that and she didnt loose a drop.

Try and get the two contact patches as dry as possible this will give a good seal.
You can get the seal from ECP its the same with the BMW part number on it
