Last night a super clean IS crashed into a kerb in my city...just spoke with the owner....he said, bloody LSD, it's a must on these cars, when a tail gets happy in rain, nothing can keep it to kick you in a wall

if it was dangerous bmw would have made them standard on all cars, ive never driven with a lsd, but if your carefull theres no reason why an open diff will be dangerous

These are old cars and the old rules apply: Slow in, fast out.
If you try and scrabble round like a FWD you'll stack it, especially in the wet.

Well I had a lotus elise come past me on the motorway today doing about 90 racing an rs4. As he went past i thought god he's brave as it was quite wet on the road.
Within 3 seconds of thinking that the back end twitched a couple of times and he was gone! Smashed into the barrier span round 4 times in a cloud of lotus bits, just missing me and two other cars and ended up on the hard shoulder!

If your not careful, lsd or no lsd your gonna get bitten!!!

I was quite spectacular and there wasn't much left, he was unhurt though. Lucky guy!!

When rain I drive with maximum concentration, both hands on steering, smooth shifting, no hitting on gas except If I want to do it on empty parking or smth...roads over here are shit, like glass, small rain makes things worse, cause roads are full of oil spills and after rain it gets slippy alot...so RWD with non experienced driver can make a lot troubles...

I was in Walker's garage a couple of years back (the Integrale nuts) and they had an Elise in the showroom, which made me chuckle. I asked the guys why they were selling a Lotus and they said the guy had nearly lost it on a damp road and chopped it in for an Integrale the next day....

Elise are all open diff, aren't they?

yep, but you can buy lsds for them :D

for what it's worth, my compact is a lot more snappy in the wet when it breaks traction with an open dif than the lsd equipped m3.

i've always found the e30 to be pretty friendly in the wet, you don't need to drive like a granny, just have a light touch and understand whats going on. ice and frost is a different matter though
cheers,

Was that on the A23 at Warninglid? I read about that yesterday here.

Mine's got an open diff and I've only ever felt the back twitch when I've been a bit over enthusiastic with the throttle in the wet.

I've had an open dif' on my touring for 7 years and have never lost the back end, or even come close to it. If you drive like a knob you'll lose it regardless.

I've had a couple of LSD equipped RWD cars and can't say they were any easier to handle in the wet than open diff stuff.

As already said if you boot it in the wet with RWD you're asking for trouble LSD or not.

In theory an open diff is 'safer' most of the time.
