No rust, good engine at 135k. Needs an MOT, rear bumper and a wee bit of TLC. Should I buy it off the non caring owner?

Yes! Rescue it, even if you dont want to keep it long term sell it on to someone that will care for it, not let it rust away.

Do it m8. E28's
But bear in mind you'll need to get rid of the nasty metric rims. Unless you wanna splash out about Ԛ£150 per tyre.

wow, thats a gorgeous motor!!! I absolutly ADORE e28's and that is a very good looking one, it has the original metric wheels which look in good nic and it has the much sort after shaddowline trim except the rear light... i do happen to have a spare set of shaddowline rear lights though which would finish it off (and other bits it might need to make it mint). it has the cloth recharos by the looks of things, very nice seats, just check for rust at the base of the wings and jacking points at the front of the sils. if they are all good looks like you got a peachy number... also , is it a manual or auto... finally... what does he want for it?????
Either way, gorgeous car!!!!!!

Just met the owner who is a very unsavoury character indeed. Really bad attitude and a bit of a stinkin minger IMO. Offered him Ԛ£100 ( which he refused ) as he says it is an "M5", so he wanted 2k for it - this for a car which has'nt been taxed for over 5 years. Explained the whole "M" and "Motorsport" thang, which he did'nt get at all. Anyhow, left him my name and number if he changes his mind. Not holding my breath though.....

well, IMHO he was probably right to refuse Ԛ£100 (I would have, also)...And you offering so low, he probably did the same and went silly high....
Talking is good (as BT used to say)...I bet you could haggle him down to a more acceptable figure for both of you...
If the 'box is really a sport item and in reasonable nick, it is worth Ԛ£250 by itself!

MATE, its no M5, its an M535, which is not realy much more than a standard model with sports kit on it. granted its still an m but its not worth much more than about Ԛ£400 MAX in that condition. If it has the getrag dogleg box then its not worth any more as they are RENOUWNED for being weak boxes... if it has the stock BMW dogleg box then it is worth money... if its got a 24valve engine then its worth 2k as it is a real m5... but the real m5 never came with all the extra m body kit, it was made to look almost completely stock. i would offer him 250 TOPS if he refuses... tell him to stuff it, 2k would get you an absolutly showroom m535 like that... and if you do happen to get it... and want to break it for parts there are many i might need! hehe
hope this guy becomes more sensible about the price - Jon

Unfortunately e28 M5s were available with the' council spec' body kit. Alas not every victim with the best part of 40 bags had the good sense and foresight to realise that the 80s wouldn't last forever, and went ahead and ticked the bad taste box. I am breaking an M5 e28 and an alpina b9 3.5 and have lots of morsels available.
P.S that sad council chariot we are discussing is a Ԛ£100 scrapper/ drift slag, providing its a runner.

how come your breaking an m5, that has to be my dream car... the real deal, non of this m535 that I have no where people take the piss cos its not 'a real m5'! Is its gorgeous 24v engine still there btw?!?! im sure that would look greak in a 535 chassic badged up as a 518! Just looking for silly little things for my car for now. when i have finished rebuilding my 320 i will have a look over and any parts i need i will definately let you know... considering shaddowling trim all round but i dont think either the m5 or b9 had that?! I have a friend with a b9 who might be interested in some parts if there is much left.. are thre any photos you could PM me??

Long sad story, M5 engine was in b9 , b9 rusty , owner buys very tidy 535 to put bits in , owner gets bored, i buy remains to frag!. I have m5 16"" bbs, 3 (!) 16 e28 alpinas, alpina stripy big recaro interior, lots of panels and electrics etc. The m5 engine and box has been sold to a hero who is fitting it to his 528i.

Well, that's it. Owner is defo not seeing the bigger picture. The Capri sitting in front of it already has the tailgate window panned in and I guess the 5 is gonna go the same way if it sits any longer. A bit p1ssed off that another classic is going to waste.......
