Bit of a dilema here, my far right top exhaust stud has snapped while i was trying to tighten it!!( the bit that bolts to the side of the engine  its leaking oil after you run the engine.
I showed it to a mechanic who says that if the exhaust is not leaking then you should be able to get away by just putting some aluminuim weld?? any suggestions pepz? as i dont want to go through the expensive route by getting the wholehead off and re threading the damn thing, as it just had the head done!

please help.

NB also the guy quoted me Ԛ£70-90 to do this. Just for one stud hole welding!!! does that sound right?

Depends on what exactly he does? I'd tell him to take Ԛ£70 and just get it done. But that's just because i can't be bothered with the hassal.

Take it somewhere else for a second oppinion.

What engine is it?

I had a snapped inlet stud on my M20.
luckily the head was off, I tried to use a stud extractor which also broke off and wouldn't drill out because it was so hard.
I took it to a local machinist who got it out using spark erosion cosing Ԛ£30.
3 weeks later I had to scrap the head anyway, but that's a different story!
On the upside, a replacement stud from the dealer is about 15p!

Sorry dude i wasn't thinking straight earlier. Do you mean he is going to just fill the hole?
What about if you want to take the manifold off again?

I'd do it the proper way!!!
It'll only cost you Ԛ£100ish if you do it yourself.

I know that but is it an m20 or S14 or even M50?

this is the best stud to break as it's the easiest to get to. U should be able to get the other old stud out and the hole heli coiled with a bigger thread with the head in situ.

Just remove the screen wash bottle for a bit more space.

My car is broke here, but it's sealed and does not blow, i have only the one stud on that chamber.

If u take the manifold off get it skimmed flat as the chances are it's warped like a banana. Which is what causes the studs to break!

simon, what sort of cost am i looking at and also is it normal for it to leak oil through there? Also I only had the stud done recently so thats a bummer! So are you saying to avoid the weld business?

Cheers buddy
