Surely, if you have to pay both for the engine and for somebody to do the work it's not worth doing? I don't know what you'd ask for it as is, but with another engine, will it be worth as much more as the cost of the engine swap? Maybe your better to cut your losses now, put it down to experience and buy another car. Sounds a bit like throwing good money after bad.

god loves a tryer mate and no one likes a quitter and im not giving up on this turd!!
when i get the engine of choice it will get new genuine parts such as... a waterpump, plugs (i have a new set of coils on there already BREMI ftw less than 6 months old  come to think of it the plugs were replaced at the same time as the coils... new plugs it is!!)
radiator and everthing associated with it.
oh and another clutch + slave and master cylinder. i might go the m20 option on the flywheel and clutch.
then its suspension time.. new bilstein b8's with new Aachen schnitzer springs :)
she will be a good'un!!
then im going to get the front and rear bumpers resprayed along with the new genuine spoiler i have...
I want some type 3 schnitzers too...

Just my 2p's worth - IIRC isn't the car you really want an E36 M3 ? if so why are you going to spend £700 on an engine plus what sounds like a several hundred more pounds on a load of other expensive parts plus all the time and effort involved on a car thats never going to be worth more than a couple of grand ?

Lets say for example that as it stands you'd get £1000 as a trade in at a dealer against an M3 - bearing in mind that as long as it starts and drives the dealer will probably just take it off you without paying too much attention to it as it will go straight to auction anyway.

If you fit a new engine and all the associated other bits you mention a dealer will still only offer you probably £1k as a trade in - or when you come to sell privately for £2k or more you'll be up against unmolested R/S Plate cars which are completely original with FSH.

I'm not knocking you mate - if you plan on keeping the car long term then go for it, but speaking from personal experience I've travelled down the road of throwing serious cash at a car that I've known I'll want to trade up from and not getting the money I've spent back on more than one occasion - it just leads to you being pissed off and your wallet taking a kicking.

Personally I'd take the hit on it now on a trade in for the M3 which is the car you really want.

I'm kind of coming from the same place as Rob - it's totally up to you, and if the car's a keeper, do it. But what you end up with won't be worth much - there will almost certainly be someone who will take it off your hands as it is and fit a fresh engine themself, and everyone gets the best of a bad job. Then you can either buy a tidier 328i Sport, an M3, another e30 or whatever you fancy, not be so enormously out of pocket and have a car you like all the better on your drive.

Not trying to get at you at all - just saying there might be a more economical way out of this hole.

Fair enough - if you can get it running as it should be they are great. My old 328i Coupe never let me down once. In over 2 Years of ownership I had 2 routine dealer services and had to replace front balljoints and a brake pipe ( MOT Advisories ) a pair of brake disks and a pair of tyres. Not much really - and it looked as good and pulled as strongly the day I sold it as it did the day I got it.

One of the best cars I've ever had :D

Hope you can get yours running well without it being too painful on the wallet ! Good luck dude 8)

Probably helped that it only had a genuine 56k on the clock with FSH when I got it and had the Nikasil block replaced under warranty by BMW  But I carried on with dealer servicing and genuine parts and it certainly showed that properly looked after they are very capable motors.
