Hope this is classed as the right section for this, as I dont wanna p1ss anyone off.... I figured ICE was the best forum for it.
Lucky me has had some new ICE.
All nice kit, all new leads, all brand new..... Only problem is I cant get it to work.
I have.....
Alpine Head Unit
Alpine 13cm coaxials in the front
Alpine 6x9s in the back
Harman Kardon 5 Channel Amp
Rockford Punch Slimline Sub
The head unit illuminates and plays CD's. Thats fine.
The speakers dont work, subb doesnt work.... this im attributing to the Amp not powering up.
I have new positive and negative leads for the amp.
I am happy with the connections I have between my battery and the amp and between the amp and the bodywork of the car for the ground.
I am happy that the connection I have between the amp and the remote cable.
I'm happy with the connection between the remote lead from the head unit (blue with white trace in case anyone wants to check up) and the remote cable.
I'm stumped!
Could someone throw some suggestions my way please, or alternatively, if you can sort it and want to earn a few quids, get yourself down to St Albans tomorrow and work out whats not right ... pretty please!!!!! - I've got all this new sexy audio and cant use it!
Hellllp please.
Thanks in advance
Scott

Sounds to me that the "Remote" is not kicking in from the headunit.

Have you checked for +12v from the blue/white remote turn on lead at the head unit??
If there's no +12v from at the remote lead on the H/U then an switched(acc )+12v feed could be used to turn the amp on.
Also
Have you checked the fuse/fuses that's in the amp itself???
1 or more of them could have blown

I would go for the fuses first as Dave said Scott.
If no joy there, then theres a fault on the head unit output for remote off/on.

I'm away from home this week so dont have my Multimeter. If I'd had that, I'm sure I would have sorted it.
I might try a switched +12v off the head unit, as I know I have a spare feed off the back of the H/U.... I just wanted to use the "right" feeds. (and the H/U is firmly in the dash now and its a proper knut to get this particular H/U out.
Fuses all over the car are A1 OK just to confirm.

Run another remote lead from the amp to any other 12v source - then you'll know for sure if that's your problem.

It only comes on high end Alpine head units if you paid less the £350 for your unit the chance of it having this feature are very smallSCOTT325SE wrote:"Ability to turn of..."eko wrote:My Alpine HU has the ability to turn off the internal amp or external amp,you sure its not just that?

well my cock is obviously much smaller than yours
Head unit is a Alpine 105Ri and apparently does not have facility to turn off an extrenal amp.

I does however have the circuitry to switch off the internal amp and switch on an external amp.SCOTT325SE wrote:well my c**k is obviously much smaller than yours![]()

Look at the top right side of page 20 in the instruction manual titled External device.
Altenatively have a look at the page on here.
http://www.alpine-electronics.co.uk/fil ... 5Ri_EN.pdf
It tells you how to switch between the internal amp and any external amps.
This may switch on the +12v feed to the amp remote lead.

Did you take the fuse out while you were connecting it to the batt?
Sorry to say it.. and i hope not You might have fried the amp by sending a surge....

right, head unit amplification is now off. Setting for external amplification is now on.BadDave wrote:I does however have the circuitry to switch off the internal amp and switch on an external amp.SCOTT325SE wrote:well my c**k is obviously much smaller than yours![]()

I always work backwards to the battery. I was working off the amp, cabled up the feed, with an inline 60amp AGU fuse, within 12-15" of the battery, as per manufacturers requirements and THEN connected to the battery. I was already earthed at this point.Zizzle wrote:Did you take the fuse out while you were connecting it to the batt?

Fuses are fine.
I've now had a tit-full and thrown in the towel. I'll get my local audio shop to have a look - I don't have the time in the week to look at it after work.

Well here we go....
ripped the amp out. used an old 2channel amp that i had lying about (untested) that has never been used. Wired the 2way amp up, wired speakers up, plugged RCA's in.
On came the light on the amp.
Install CD into player.
press play.
CD Played.
Switched ignition off, removed key.
Went back to boot, changed RCA's around, repeatted sequence and it wouldnt fire up. Now I get a flashing light on the Amp.
I reset it to the first working spec and it wont fking work again!
I'm so fking p1ssed off with this! I'm about 3 goes away from throwing a very large spanner at the whole lot!
Tried resetting everything on the new amp and I dont even get a light.
Im gonna go back to a gramaphone if this lot wont work soon.

You may need to use better cables and find a better earth like i said above my alpine mono refuses to work unless it have a really good power supply and earth.SCOTT325SE wrote:Well here we go....

Out of intrest is your new amp (the one thats not working) more powerful than the one that did work, if so i think my theory may be correct

Cables are brand spankers and I actually went for the better ones than the guy in the Audio shop said I needed / advised me to get. Apparently the ones I went for are what they'd have used on a 2-3k install. Mine is under a grand.... cant for the life of me remember what brand they are though.

Its not all about the brand of cable sure a good make is desirable when it comes to earth and power its about how thick it is i recently went from 4 guage to 8 guage power and earth cables and fitted a 1 farad capasitor and you wont believe the difference in sound and it solved the cutting out problem.
What are you using for an earth?? I’ve taken my earth cable though one of the small holes in rear bulk head and used one of the seat belt bolts
You’ll be amazed as what difference a bad earth can make prehaps the amp is just shagged but its
worth a try

There is a bolt that holds the plastic battery tray in the boot. I cleaned the paint off that area and removed the bolt and used that clean area of metal that I created and went for a direct contact with the earth lead. I might try that rear seat belt idea though, as you can really crank those 17mm bolts down and there is plenty of metal to carry that current...... although it is directly below the fuel tank... which I was initially trying to avoid.pac1982 wrote:Its not all about the brand of cable sure a good make is desirable when it comes to earth and power its about how thick it is i recently went from 4 guage to 8 guage power and earth cables and fitted a 1 farad capasitor and you wont believe the difference in sound and it solved the cutting out problem.

THANK YOU!
