its an e reg sorry h reg was my old car and the ignition lights stay ON when it cuts out not off sorry
IS this the fuel injected version or the one with the carb? I had a similar problem with my e-plate 316 in that it would cut out at junctions when the clutch was dipped, unless you buried the throttle.
However it never failed to start, but when it was ticking over it was very uneven and would never settle down to a consistant engine speed.
It turned out the carb was duff
So I got a Weber version and put that on and all was fine after it was setup.
Does any of that sound familiar?

I remember having this problem on an 87 E 316 1.8 and, although the carb was a bit knackered, it turned out to be some kind of 'air valve'. Sorry can't remember the name of the part but will describe it. It's black and pretty much mouse sized (pc that is) with an in pipe and an out pipe. There's a valve inside which knackers. It sits pretty close to the carb to which it is attached via a vacuum hose. It cost 40 quid 10 years ago. Took the stealers 5 hours to figure the problem!
Mine would stall everytime my foot was off the accelerator.
Hope this helps

I assume you have checked that you have got a spark if not try the distributer cap as it might have worn out...i had the same thing at xmas with my fiat coupe..all you have to do is replace it for about Ԛ£8

yeah got a spark but gonna change the dizzy and the coil to see if that helps
If its the carb one it might be a blocked jet so here's a trick I was taught years ago
Take the air filter off completly
Start the engine
From inside the bay open the throttle a bit with one hand- don't rev the nuts off it
Let go of throttle and as the revs die put your other hand over the intake to block all the air off
Before the engine stops whip your hand off and catch it on the throttle with the other one
The theory is that the vacum caused by the engine turning, sucks any cԚ£$p out of the carb
I know it sounds a bit hairy but it does work
Good luck
